Music Monday – The World’s Greatest Cover Band

If you’ve been a FANdemonium Network reader for a while then you might have read about these guys before, but if not prepare to meet The World’s Greatest Cover Band a.k.a. Our Last Night.

Post Hardcore three piece (now anyway) Our Last Night have been making music since 2004 (when lead vocalist Trevor Wentworth was still in middle school). They released their first few albums under the Epitaph label but are now completely independent, running their entire operation, including filming their own music videos, themselves. Since 2016 they have become, without too much exaggeration, the kings of covers. Where Punk Goes… began, they now dominate, releasing hard rock/metal covers of everything from Taylor Swift to Disney (yes, really) via Kendrick Lamar and Zach Bryan.

But here’s the twist. They release their own stuff too, and it SLAPS. For anyone else out there who understands that sometimes the heavy stuff makes the rest of the world go quiet – these guys are for you. They combine heavy riffs and searing vocals with seriously insightful and uplifting lyrics. Not to mention one of the most badass drummers in the business (Tim, you’re a legend!).

Buried Alive

“My shame swallowed me whole, beat me down, tormented my soul… I can’t escape my vices cos they numb the pain.”

These lyrics absolutely get how isolating depression and anxiety can be, and how it can make you feel like you have been buried alive. I also love that guitar riff, it’s got this really spooky vibe to it (the track was released in October 2021) that’s equal parts jaunty and heavy.

Losing Game

One of their brand new originals is Losing Game. That screamed bridge hits hard every single time this one plays (which is a lot!) – I just love the message there; “If you’re feeling hopeless, you’re never in too deep, there’s still time to save yourself”.

Sunrise

Now, I can’t really talk about this band, and the positive messages of their lyrics, without mentioning their monumental hit – Sunrise. If you’re not one for the screaming, this one is for you. There’s even an acoustic version. You only need to look at the comments on this one to understand how much of an impact this band have had, and continue to have on their fans.

Something in the Orange

Their most recent release (as in it only came out on Friday) is a cover of Zach Bryan’s Something in the Orange.

I was hooked within the first couple of lines of this one, and I definitely hope that they continue doing more country covers (they previously did Last Night by Morgan Wallen and, well, does Old Town Road count?). I really think their signature style, not to mention the balance between Matt and Trevor’s vocals, works so well with this kind of music!

Their covers have been, at least in recent years, a little divisive, even among fans. But they have absolutely decided to embrace it. For a while recently their twitter handle was “The World’s Greatest Cover Band” and they even had a shirt on their last tour merch list that said the same. And now they have doubled down with this… The Covers Only Tour.

regains composure

(fun fact – this video was directed by Carson Butcher from El Ray who we interviewed recently, and the other member of El Ray, Drew Harrison, is the guy in the suit on the phone who ends up screaming on his knees at the end).

Tickets are on sale now for this US/Canada tour, with plans for the UK/Europe in the works for later in 2024. I am actually flying from the UK to meet up with FN contributor Brina for the Anaheim show on April 21st. Let us know if you’re planning on picking up tickets.

And no… you weren’t hearing things – that really was a cover of Who Let The Dogs Out by The Baja Men WITH The Baja Men as they walked in!

Let us know what you think of the World’s Greatest Cover Band.
