Percy Jackon and the Olympians -- The Prophecy Comes True -- Walker Scobell, Leah Sava, Aryan Simhadri

PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS – Disney’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” stars Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover. (Disney)

The friendship between Percy Jackson, Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries), and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) is one of the most endearing and significant relationships in the Percy Jackson series, forming the basis for their adventures and growth as individuals. Did the series do a good job of displaying this?

Amy – They did a really great job showing the build-up friendship between Percy and Annabeth; and with Grover adding in some comic relief every now and then. The trio faced so many challenges and battled terrifying monsters, all while relying on each other’s strengths, and relying on each other; which is first each of them. Especially Annabeth, who went from all about glory and pleasing her mother, Athena, to learning that there is another way and that the gods are just jerks. Her character development is one of my favorites during the season.

Brina – I totally think they did an awesome job with the friendships. I honestly love that Percy kinda held back on what he knew about the prophecy and one of his “friends” betraying him. He trusted them anyway even though he had doubts about it. He has his guard up. Annabeth has her own demons but she really wanted Percy to be the one and be his friend. I also loved when Grover’s memory was lost after the lotus casino, they continued to love him and kept him with them. They have a powerful friendship and I can’t wait to see it grow next season.

This season we saw a lot of different cameos, which one was your favorite?

Amy – Ares (Adam Copeland) has got to be my favorite cameo this entire season, and it would be a crime if we don’t see more of him next season. Every time he was on screen his presence was there and just powerful. I feel like Adam did a really good job at playing Ares, the arrogant and daring god of war. Even though he was a jerk, I cheered every time he was on the screen. Especially when Percy defeated him in the last battle

Brina – Medusa (Jessica Parker Kennedy) was my favorite for a few reasons. One, I have always been a fan of Greek mythology and Medusa’s story has always fascinated me. And two, I love Jessica. She is so beautiful and she has played so many different roles but this one was perfect for her. She played Medusa in a way that makes you feel for her and what she went through. Sucks she had to die but that is how the story goes.

Top Favorite Moment

Amy – I laughed when Percy sent Medusa’s head to the gods while acting like that wasn’t the biggest deal. If you watch post-credits in the finale episode you will also see that the head gets sent back to him and ends up turning his step-dad into stone.

Brina – I loved it when Percy went into the ocean and realized he could breathe underwater. I also loved when Ares was eating in the diner. There was just something about all the food he was eating. Like Amy said there is something great about the end scene with him getting turned into stone. It’s just awesome.

Least Favorite Moment

Amy – I wish we saw more of the friendship between Luke (Charlie Bushnell) and Percy. That way the people who haven’t read the books could understand how deep that betrayal really was a deep between friends. And how it plays a huge part later on.

Brina – I would have liked to see more of Percy at the school. I felt like it was a bit rushed. Also I again like Amy said the friendships and the betrayal between Percy and Luke.

Compared to the books, the movies, and now a TV series, which is your favorite?

Amy – The show has done a spectacular job of capturing everything (if not mostly everything) from the books, including how the characters interact with each other. The movies lacked a lot in that, but in the series you got to watch the friendship form between Annabeth and Percy like it did in the books. Let alone the fact that the actors have also done an amazing job conveying the characters.

Brina – I loved the movies but books always give so many details that TV shows and movies leave out. But I will say that Disney did a great grab with this one so far.

Overall Thoughts; Is there anything you’d like to add

Amy – I was one of those kids who went through a Greek Mythology phase and the Percy Jackson series helped fuel that obsession. You can’t compare this show to the movies, as it is a series and they had more of a chance to show the entirety of the book and capture all the details that the movie obviously missed. The movie will always hold a special place in my heart. That being said, this is my favorite show of the year so far, they have done a fantastic job at staying faithful to the book, the performances, the scenes, and just everything. This is a series I could rewatch over and over and still find more details that I would love. Not going to lie, I am excited for next season; definitely, if we get Kronos and they follow the books.

Brina – I am not sure I would add anything. I am super excited to see where they go with this. There is so much more to come if they are following the book series. Having always been into Greek Mythology I am here for it and so ready for more.
