Wonder Egg Priority “The Domain Of Children” Review

Wonder Egg Priority “The Domain Of Children” is the first episode of the Wonder Egg Priority series. It is an original work by CloverWorks Studios.

“The Domain Of Children” sees the audience introduced to the main character, Ohdo Ai. Who is guided to another world where she wakes up with an unbreakable egg and no idea what to do with it.

Overview

Ai finds herself suddenly awaking from a dream. Discovering the egg she got was real. With no idea what to do, she goes outside again and the world of dreams and reality suddenly collide again. She sees people writing “die” on what’s presumed to be her locker. Though the “students” in this world all have blurred out faces.

She is finally instructed to break the egg and inside she finds. A girl. A normal human girl.

Suddenly her and the girl are attacked by “Seenoevils”. The girl tells Ai that she can’t be hurt in this world but the girl from the egg can. Over time, desperately seeking refuge Ai finds friendship in this new girl. So much so that she manages to summon a weapon from her pen and kill the monsters student trying to kill her friend.

Wonder Egg Priority Ai's Weapon

As she’s curling up on a statue of her friend, Nagase Koito, who committed suicide. She realises that it’s warmer than before. Putting two and two together she comes to the conclusion that she’ll have to get more “Wonder Eggs” and protect them in order to bring her friend back to life.

Review

One episode and I’m already hooked. Not only is the animation gorgeous but the themes being represented here are hard to swallow at times. Whilst at times it may seem obvious that you’re being spoon fed the subtle messages, it’s not quite so clear cut.

As much as it would be so easy to pass this episode off in two ways; either, I don’t get it and hate that it’s confusing or I’ve seen this crap before it’s nothing new. To which I say: not necessarily. I was in the latter camp before I re-watched episode one (after watching the 7 episodes that are currently out) and noticed a ton of stuff I wouldn’t have before because I now had more info on the dream world.

It may be beautifully animated but even with episode 1 you get the feeling that it’s so much more and it has so much more to give.
