The Rising Of The Shield Hero “Ruins In The Fog” Review

The Rising Of The Shield Hero “Ruins In The Fog” is the fourth episode of the Shield Hero anime. And thankfully a much better episode than episode 3. This episode shows Naofumi and Co. get one the back of the Spirit Tortoise whilst it’s incapacitated and explore some ruins there. Whilst also looking for clues as to how the Tortoise woke up in the first place and hoping Ost will have some memories returned to her as she’s so close to the Tortoise. We also learn a little more about Rishia and her past.

Rishia’s Obsession

Rishia’s obsession with serving the bow hero is finally explained and though it’s understandable, I think even she’s starting to notice that no matter how strong she becomes Itsuki will never really see her as an important part of a team as his single minded search for “justice” blinds him from everything else. It was Noafumi’s party that first noticed her potential and encouraged her to use it. Hopefully she’ll stick with them as she’s definitely becoming less and less annoying the more challenges she faces. Fact is, Rishia had more character growth, mainly thanks to Ost and Raphtalia, in this one episode than in any other episode she’s been in.

Maybe my acceptance for this episode is skewed because I’m thankful that we’re starting to see some progress but I went from wanting to drop the series entirely last week to not wanting to wait to see what happens next week with this one. Ost has become an instant favourite but even I’m warming to Rishia, hoping for her to realise her potential and show that she’s genuinely something special.

I can’t help but feel that the two studios working on this series has made the whole thing very messy. It’s up and down like a yo-yo at the moment and I’m not sure I can keep invested in a show that has a 50% chance of having a sloppy episode.

This episode however, was fun, well paced and finally answered questions I’d been asking since Rishia showed up. I liked it.
