The Rising Of The Shield Hero “A New Roar” Review

The Rising Of The Shield Hero “A New Roar” is the twenty sixth episode of the Shield Hero anime series. Following on from then ending of season 1 and Noafumi’s new title of Lord and Rishia joining the party. The new group find themselves in new trouble as the Spirit Tortoise rises up again from the north, destroying everything as it goes, whilst also bringing with it multi dimensional beasts.

New Season Same Shield Hero

This episode opens up right where episode 25 left off and that’s both a good thing and bad. As much as Shield Hero is a typical isekai in many ways it’s not so typical in others, for instance I know plenty that don’t require you to watch the first season before you get into the second. And this one isn’t one of them. Just for those who aren’t already in love with this series; you will have to watch S1 or you’ll be completely and utterly lost here. This can also be a great thing though. This episode in particular benefits greatly from not having to back track, getting on with the plot and action scenes immediately giving the episode a snappy and smooth feel. No sluggish call backs in order to explain, just keep on trucking with what people already know.

The battle scenes are kept to a small and quick scene near the end and beginning of the episode. I suspect to save everything for when the party has to face the Tortoise, though that’s purely speculation. Raphtalia’s lack of any sense that pressuring Rishia into becoming Noafumi’s newest slave is totally consistent with her character and shows how much she’s changed and grown. She knows slavery in itself is a bad thing but doesn’t mind it if it comes with the benefits of helping someone become stronger, pretty much her entire arc in season 1. Nice to see it shadowed here, though I doubt Rishia will become just as obsessed with Noafumi, she’s still set on doing anything to win back the respect of Ishiki. No-one knows why yet. Though I am curious.

Overall this is a great episode to start the new season! Keeps itself light on the action but there’s just enough tension in the background to know not everything is as it seems.
