The Rising Of The Shield Hero “Racing To Catch Up” Review

The Rising Of The Shield Hero “Racing To Catch Up” is the sixth episode of the Shield Hero season 2. Following the fight with the book vassal wielder Kyo in episode 5. He rivals that everything they did was for nothing and they should’ve killed Ost from the start. Whilst he’s being as cocky as ever the tam put together a plan to take down the shield protecting him, take off the head and kill the heart at the same time, Fitoria comes in to help and does all of the fighting taking off the head. Whilst L’arc and co take out the heart with Filo’s help. Ost gives the power of the spirit tortoise to Noafumi’s shield, giving him a new shield to use instead of the rage one. He uses his newly gained shield to destroy the barrier Kyo put around the core and destroys the Spirit Tortoise, slowly killing Ost, but not before the team are able to jump through a portal to another world. L’arc’s world, and follow team L’arc in their pursuit of Kyo.

The Development Of The Shield Hero

Honestly, I’m shocked at how moving I found this episode. Even though Ost has only been in a handful of episodes this season she’s grown on me so much that I’m devastated she’s gone. The music as she dies, Naofumi not being able to kill her because for once he has no hatred. That was a big one for me, a sign Naofumi is beginning to heal and mature, he’s not stupid he knows how many souls Ost has taken as the Spirit Tortoise but can’t bring himself to feel and hatred towards her at all. He’s grown up, the old Naofumi likely wouldn’t have even bothered being her friend if there was no financial gain but he did and now he’s lost that friend but he himself has matured as a person despite that.

The fact that he was so quick to show just how devastated he was is also proof of his growth but it’s been so gradual and slight that it’s only really obvious when you see it now in this context. Speaking of growth, Rishia has a similar moment of growth, though not as subtle. She absolutely tears Kyo a new one vocally and almost literally. When she needs to she can seriously fight, she’s an amazing member of the team and this episode has made her my least favourite to one of my most favourite characters in a matter of minutes.

This was the best episode of season 2 so far. It’s seriously taken a step up in terms of quality. I can’t wait to see what episode 7 has in store!
