Tomodachi Game “Huh Yuichi Kun Suspects His Friends” Review

Tomodachi Game “Huh Yuichi Kun Suspects His Friends” is the first episode of the anime adaptation of the Tomodachi Game manga. Produced by the Okuturo Noboru company. It’s one of the newest high stakes thriller anime. Though the manga already has a TV adaptation. This episode introduces us to best friends Yuichi, Tenji, Shibe, Kokonogi and Sawaragi all of them transported to an odd place where they must play games as best friends in order to clear debt that they’d paid themselves into. Think Squid Game but no killing, just testing the selfishness of humans and how deep loyalties lie when obstacles are put in the way.

Yuichi and Co.

Throughout the episode we get small glances of Yuichi’s childhood which serves to show the struggle he personally is going through but even more than that the situation he finds himself in makes him remember small things that happened between his friends that he previously would’ve brushed off. Especially once he starts getting suspicious of everyone. Small little arguments suddenly seem like something that the others have been plotting revenge for, whilst he’s simultaneously torn between that and his loyalty to the one person he doesn’t seem to doubt (yet.)

The whole set up seems like your typical high stakes game but it’s really the characters that have gotten me interested here. I already have a favourite and I already find myself questioning if one of them really is suspicious. You know a show is good when you can’t wait to see what kind of fallout happens next episode. Especially seeing as I have no idea if the friends will realise Yuichi’s plan and play along or if someone’s ignorance will tip the scales. The question he posed was definitely one that’ll start chatter (which is against the rules of game 1.)

The fact that it focuses only on the 5 friends and Manabu-kun helps the character driven point of the show. Too many characters and I’d probably find it less interesting. For now I’m hoping best boy Shibe isn’t a traitor and can’t wait for next week!
