The Executioner And Her Way Of Life “The Ancient Capital Garm” Review

The Executioner And Her Way Of Life “The Ancient Capital Garm” is the fourth episode of the Virgin Road anime. Following the eventful episode 3, this episode slows down a lot to allow for Menou’s full backstory and her and Akari arriving in Garm and getting to the cathedral. With a small helping of Momo worrying about her friend once again.

Garm

Menou’s life story is pretty much exactly what you’d expect except for one thing. It’s very much solidified that she doesn’t kill through a sense of duty to the church but more through her admiration and love for Flare, her eventual tutor. Even Flare is surprised by how much the incident that left her all alone messed her up but used it as a way to get the very best out of Menou. This may prove a big problem as Menou isn’t going to be stopped with emotion as an excess of emotion isn’t why she kills, a lack of it is. Akari may unlock something in Menou that even she didn’t know was there but it’ll be a very bumpy ride until such a time.

Also, the ending of this episode showed just how much trust the church and Orwell have in Menou not to fail. Not only is she given access to the files containing information about something Orwell has been looking at but Orwell herself says she has potential. This might just be the church’s undoing as they feel completely safe and sure that Menou will never stray but I can see it happening. Either that or it’s one hell of a red herring I’ve fallen for.

Overall, despite the slow pace this was definitely an episode that made an already great show better. It did go over some things that Menou herself mentioned in episode 1, confirming it’s validity in the teachings of the church.
