Summertime Render “Washing Ashore” Review

Summertime Render “Washing Ashore” is the third episode of the Summertime Render anime. Following the revelation shared in episode 2. Shinpei and Mio decide to go and warn Shiori that she’s in potential danger. Unfortunately, it seems that the Shiori that was there was already a Shadow so she goes to kill Shinpei whilst he’s in her home. After a close encounter Shin and Mio entrust what they know about the Shadows to Sou, with both of them admitting they don’t trust each other. The day of the festival comes and ends with Shinpei seeing Ushio’s Shadow.

Who Is Trustworthy?

I’ve said it before but this show is lining up the layers of mystery perfectly. Absolutely no-one can be trusted, I don’t even trust Mio. Especially seeing as not much is known about the Shadows themselves, it’s hard to know if there’s any way of telling the difference. The whole episode had me suspecting Mio, then Sou.

Maybe Mio really is as dumb as a rock but there seems to be no urgency to her, she’s just found out that Shadows exist and are wiping people out and she seems to take it in her stride. But Sou is super suspicious too. It was his suggestion to make a codeword in case they come across their Shadows, Mio every trusting goes along with it quite happily, but he also goes out of his way to hide something from Shinpei. Again I’ve got the feeling that it’s another red herring and it’ll turn out to be something completely innocent but he should know not to act suspiciously when they’re keeping watch for Shadows.

This is such a good show and it’s a shame Disney have decided to region lock it for now, everyone should be able to see it and for me it’s already the anime of the season. It’s amazing.
