RWBY Vol 8 Chapter 14 – The Final Word Discussion

It’s finale time. Following on from that shocking cliffhanger in chapter 13, Sophie, Clare and Nathaniel are here to discuss RWBY Vol 8 Chapter 14 – The Final Word.

RWBY Vol 8 Chapter 14 – The Final Word Synopsis

Sometimes it’s worth it all to risk the fall.

On the drop ships the bomb is about to fall out of the ship but stops when Qrow (Jason Liebrecht) looks at Clover’s emblem. Has he found a way to turn his semblance to his advantage?

S – I hope so, as you know I’m a massive fan of Qrow and it’s just his kind of luck you need to foil someone’s plans!

C – I really hope it’s his Semblance evolving to be able to manipulate luck both ways, not just bad. Since he has quit drinking and is committed to the good fight it would be great to see that step for his character.

N – Qrow was already one of the strongest characters but if he manages to use his semblance to his advantage, then he’s going to cause a lot of trouble for Salem in the future.

Vine (Todd Womack) goes full Groot and sacrifices himself to save Mantle from the bomb. Do you think Harriet (Anairis Quinones) will see the error of her unfailing obedience and become a normal human from now on?

RWBY The Final Word Vine

C – I hope this is the reality check she needs. Especially with both Vine and Elm (Dawn Michelle Bennett) talking about being friends and after Marrow’s stand a couple of chapters ago. Still not entirely convinced she won’t go evil though…

N – If she doesn’t see what she’s done under Ironwoods rule then she is just going to have the same outcome as Ironwood….

S – Man she needs a slap, maybe this is the reality check she needed. I guess she was in denial for so long about her feelings towards her teammates.

Penny (Taylor McNee) made the ultimate sacrifice to make sure the power of the Winter Maiden went to Winter (Elizabeth Maxwell) instead of Cinder (Jessica Nigri).

The Final Word Penny Winter

N – Sadly as this is a discussion I can’t just put “No comment” this had to be one of the hardest scenes for me to watch through, I can tell you this is one discussion where I haven’t rewatched the episode…. I really wasn’t prepared for it but Penny knew exactly what to do but it’s going to be hard in the following volumes as she really was my favourite character. As Sophie said she was honourable till the end but the scene where Penny passed over the powers to winter was traumatising.

S – I’m kind of with Nathaniel, I really wanted to block this from my mind. It just seems so harsh making her a real girl then to have it so brutally taken away. It was a very honourable thing to do though, which was Penny through and through. Heartbreaking to watch.

C – Good god I never expected CRWBY to go THERE. Actually making Jaune kill her. After everything she’s been through. We literally JUST got her back.

The Final Word Penny

Winter v Cinder was a pretty incredible fight, Winter seems to have taken to the powers of the Maiden very quickly. Were you surprised by that?

S – Nope, Winter was ready for it. I think she is gonna be a force to be reckoned with, she certainly won’t make it easy for Cinder to get her hands on the maiden powers. It does make me wonder if Cinder will try Raven again.

C – Not really, since she has been groomed to be an Elite soldier with the aim of taking on the power of the Winter Maiden when Fria died. I guess she has studied and trained to understand the power better than others we have seen. That said, Penny sure took to it pretty fast too.

N – Winter was amazing she definitely showed that she deserves the power. I just wish it didn’t mean they had to kill off Penny.

Since Ruby (Lindsay Jones), Blake (Arryn Zech), Weiss (Kara Eberle), Jaune (Miles Luna) and Neo all fell I think it’s safe to assume Yang (Barbara Dunkelman) is not dead as we all feared after the previous chapter. Given the post credit glimpse, what are your predictions for what we might see in Vol 9?

The Final Word end

Clare’s Predictions

waits for Sophie to say Dinosaurs

We got a bunch of references to the girl who fell through the world in this volume, so I think we could be seeing a journey through various alternate realms outside of Remnant for RWBY et al as they try to make their way back to Remnant.

I’m kinda hoping since she’s been betrayed or abandoned by everyone that Neo might team up with our heroes, but I’m not holding out too much hope.

Also I hope we get to see what Nora, Ren, Oscar and Winter get up to in Vacuo. Salem is on her way, Tyrian and Mercury are already there… Teams CVFY and SSSN are there to help out with resettling all the Atlas refugees… There’s so much to dig into.

Nathaniel’s Predictions

I think the Volume will be split between team RWBY and Jaune and hopefully the other refugees (if they’re not eaten by dinosaurs) and Nora, Ren, Oscar and Winter in Vacuo.

There’s obviously lots of various things that are going to challenge both teams with the obvious being Salem and Cinder and urm other realities, team RWBY and Jaune are going have to deal with a lot of problems that followed them like Neo as well as what’s on the other side already with them.

Sophie’s Predictions

HAHAHA. It made me think of Ice Age. What can I say? If there are dinosaurs though I will totally be saying “I told you so”. Once the tree came into view, my brain immediately went to the Mana Tree or the Tree of Life. I think they have entered the realm of the gods, also can I just say I’m so glad Yang isn’t dead.

Do you think Neo will put aside her grievance with Ruby and actually work with them to get home?

Anything could happen, what if time works differently and Yang being the one that fell first has actually been there a lot longer. Jaune is clearly going to be needed to boost someone’s aura or help heal. What if they fell into the underworld? It looked a bit too tropical for that but….I kind of hope they don’t go all Lost on us. That was a terrible program.

I could keep going with theories TBF so maybe I should stop.

I would like to say this season has been brutal, there were a handful of light-hearted moments but it took a dark turn. The animation has been brilliant. CRWBY has done an amazing job. Also a massive well done for making me feel so invested in this anime that I genuinely cried on several occasions!
