Music Monday – Jamie Bower

Music Monday – Jamie Bower

Riding high on the back of his starring turn in volume 4 of Stranger Things, this Music Monday we are jamming out to Jamie Bower (aka Jamie Campbell Bower) and his new track “I Am”.

The track itself is a foot-stomping, hand-clapping, dark country inspired number that had me absolutely hooked from the intro (disclaimer: I love Jamie’s music, saw him live with Counterfeit). I defy anyone listening to this to NOT clap/tap their feet. Jamie’s drawling accent on this track is a departure from his usual singing style, but it absolutely works. There are a couple of moments where his English accent bleeds through, but only barely.

The video echoes the country vibes, with Jamie again playing dual roles; a fire-and-brimstone type preacher railing from the pulpit and a loner who enters the church. As the opening lyrics say “I’m an angel, I’m a demon…” It’s hard to say which is which though, as the preacher certainly seems to have the devil in him, not to mention the inverted cross on the bible he brandishes, while the young man who approaches the church definitely has an angelic look. Okay maybe that’s just Jamie. If you’ve seen Stranger Things you’ll know how easily Jamie can slip between roles with just a look, a postural change, or a slightly different hairstyle. This clearly served him well for this video.

There was another lyric that made me giggle a bit, although I’m sure it was unintentional. The old school among you FANdemaniacs will of course know Jamie from The Twilight Saga, and the line “I’m the bobcat on the far side of the breaking dawn…”, well, you understand.

The only thing I didn’t like about this track is that there isn’t more of it. Clocking in just a shade over 2 minutes, it hits you like a summer storm and then vanishes again.

I Am is available to stream on Spotify. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to hit play for the umpteenth time.
