Mieruko Chan “Did You See That” Review

Mieruko Chan “Did You See That” is the seventh episode of the Mieruko chan anime. Using all the information given to us in episode 6. And following Yulia’s story from episode 5. This episode shows Yulia go up against Miko as she still assumes she thinks she’s better than her. And with Hana’s help, maybe finally getting some friends of her own.

Plot

Yulia barges in on Hana showing Miko her cool photography skills by suggesting they go somewhere more “aesthetic” to take them. Using this as a ruse to force Miko to recognise her as an equal. All the While Miko tries to avoid the situation knowing that Yulia can’t see certain ghosts. The dangerous ones.

The whole thing pans out as you’d expect. Hana’s aura attracts a crap ton of ghosts but one particularly nasty one that Yulia can’t see. The nasty ghost kills all the other smaller ones and Yulia assumes it’s Miko doing it by exorcizing them. She tries her best to exorcize a smaller one and it does die eventually but because of the big ghost not her. She mistakes it for her power though and thinks that’s enough to get Miko’s attention. Her actions cause the ghost to realise that the two can see it though, and goes to attack when the two guardian spirits from the previous episode step in and repel it. Miko has an absolute breakdown trying to protect the two and finally drags them out of the haunted tunnel.

They all go to get some food on a friendly note, thanks to Hana. The post credit scene shows Yulia noticing just how powerful Hana’s aura is and going to say something to her before she’s stopped by Miko. Who only hands her the pastry she’s eating because it’s red and she thought she’d like it. The pastry in question is called a “bloody old fashioned” so she takes it as a threat from Miko.

Review

What a great episode! It’s pacing was perfect leading up to the tunnel scene. The whole time you could feel just how nervous Miko was and just how excited Hana was. The two different views on everything bringing a duality that’s comedic gold as well as deeply emotional as you can, in many cases, see Miko’s dread. Having the two characters with the vision be so very different and rivals almost, even if they don’t know it, is another layer of fun that cuts through the tension like a white hot blade.

The group bounce off each other well. Miko almost realising that Hana is attracting the ghosts, Yulia noticing her power and not putting two and two together because she can’t see the particularly horrid ones and Hana who just goes about her life in blissful ignorance. I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures await these three.
