Mieruko Chan “She Totally Sees Them” Review

Mieruko Chan “She Totally Sees Them” is the second episode of the Mieruko-Chan anime. Following her terrifying revelation that she can see ghosts in episode 1. Miko does her best to live as normal a life as possible. She soon finds out that it’s somewhat impossible when the dead are everywhere and start to harass Hana. She eventually finds her place though by helping a haunted kitten find a new home. The dead wife of the new owner looks suspiciously like her though and Miko also rebuts a suspicious man surrounded by “dark ghost energy.” Who has the same red eyes as Yuria.

Review

Another great episode from Mieruko. Whilst this may seem very simple, Miko is obviously distinguishing herself from others who can see ghosts. The suspicious man in the park seemed very interested in the kitten and it’s clear he can obviously see them too. Instead, Miko kept the kitten away from him and gave it to a burly man who clearly loves cats. Having two of his other cats’ spirits stay with him already.

It’s unclear whether he can see the ghost haunting the kitten or if the kitten just reminds him of his wife but he’s obviously taken with it. The hauntings at school are so much worse now that Miko is aware of it. They’re everywhere and I think Miko is starting to accept that just ignoring them isn’t a good long term plan, especially when one starts feeling Hana up. She knows she has to do something she’s just at a loss as to what to do.

Whilst it’s obviously terrifying, the episode deals with it brilliantly. Knowing when to bring the deadpan humour and when to allow the terror to take control of the pacing. A good example would be when Miko realises the real world consequences of her ability when she accidentally steps into a line that’s made entirely of ghosts that are about to be eaten by a bigger ghost. The spirit world and the real world are one and the same for her at the moment and she has to find a way to distinguish them before someone gets hurt.
