Made In Abyss “The Cradle of Desire” Review

Made In Abyss “The Cradle of Desire” is the seventh episode from the second season of the Made In Abyss anime. After the start of mystery after mystery in episode 6 things are finally explained this episode, whilst also introducing another twist. The entire episode plays out in Vueko’s past when her team first got to the Golden City.

Vueko and Irumyuui

The only other’s there are 1 hollow with what looks like a white whistle or the beginnings of one and automatons. Vueko spends most of her time with Irumyuui. Whilst Belaf and Wazukyan send off different teams to search the area for habitable places to settle down as they learn humans can’t go back up to the surface and stay human. Irumyuui let’s slip that her mother is someone “very important” and she was basically banished because she can’t have children but that her mother has lots of sons, I’m assuming the Queen or something but knowing this show it could be anything.

Soon everyone becomes sick because of the water they’re drinking. But the food corps before they died found something near the water area, a “Wish Granting Egg” but it works only with children because they’re not complex like adults, using a child’s innocence as a way to make the egg work. Vueko knows Irumyuui is the best person for the job and against her better judgement lets her use it to make a wish to save everyone in camp as she lies dying.

Irumyuui survives and becomes the way she is now, plus the egg imbedded in her chest now plops out “children” that die not 24 hours after they’re born. This happens every day but as Vueko lay dying she’s saved by Wazukyan who says “that girl saved everyone” hinting that the meat in the broth he fed her was made from the dead children she’d been suffering over.

Review

Man, what an episode! Irumyuui’s story is just tragedy after tragedy and for the longest time I was waiting for Belaf and Wazukyan to betray Vueko but they didn’t. They’re definitely not goody goodies though, I’ve a feeling because the episode was from the point of view of a child a lot of very shady things have been deliberately left out. I can’t trust those two at all.

The whole episode was what Made In Abyss is all about, death, tragedy, hope and the loss of that hope and  the willingness to go on no matter what. Loved it, great episode.
