86: Eighty Six “Together Unto Death” Review

86: Eighty Six “Together Unto Death” is the twentieth episode of the 86 anime. Following the attack on the Morpho in episode 19. Team 86 have some down time, whilst others scheme and plan their deaths. It seems nothing has changed.

No Will To Live

Shin and Raiden have a heart to heart, well, less a heart to heart and more a “you’re a damn suicidal idiot!” Something everyone has noticed. Shin has no reason to be alive anymore after he killed his brother so he’s just been doing really reckless stuff. Raiden and the others have noticed but it’s not until now that they’ve mentioned anything. The others meanwhile are listening in to their argument, everyone worried about Shin. Especially Kurena who asks if Shin knows, Frederica tells her that he sees her as an annoying little sister so there goes any hope for her.

Meanwhile Commander Richard and Willem make it quite clear that they didn’t plan for the 86 to live this long. Willem being glad purely because it means the Federation can use them more as tools instead of having to get new ones. Their distaste for the 86 deeply driving their decision making as they, like the Republic, only see them as disposable tools.

This was an enlightening episode. Frederica’s chat with Shin only really highlighted what everyone already knew. He has no dreams, he doesn’t want anything so is he even still alive? It’s a thought constantly on his mind and it’s depressing to see him stand tall for the others assuming they only keep him around because they need his powers.

Lovely filler episode.
