86: Eighty Six “Welcome Back” Review

86: Eighty Six “Welcome Back” is the fifteenth episode of the 86 anime. Continuing on from the tragedies Shin dealt with in episode 14. This episode deals with his and his friend’s acceptance of impending doom, plus a little bit of nostalgia for him as he is reminded of Lena.

Review

Shin is put in an awkward position as he warns the Federacy that their scanners are wrong and more Legion than they know will be attacking. But they’re 100% confident in their technology and their superiority as a nation when it comes to dealing with the 86. They’re absolutely convinced they’re morally better than the Republic. Ironically enough being much more dangerous than them because of that arrogance. Yes, the Republic treated the 86 like scum but at least they never pretended to do otherwise. The Federacy and it’s higher ups pretend like they don’t and seem to genuinely buy the lie that the 86 are more than welcome.

This episode finally puts the gang back together again. If only for a small time. With a lot of comedy moments coming from the short time they are together. Especially with Frederica around. With her accidentally mistaking Shin for her “knight” Kiriya Nouzen, a distant cousin of Shin’s. And walking around half naked, she basically becomes a baby sister to the rest of the gang. Though Shin does say she reminds him of himself when he was younger. Though it isn’t clear if he sees that as a good or bad thing.

Finally this episode gives a bit more in depth information on the extended Nouzen Clan. But what really got me was that Raiden finally addressed the elephant in the room, Lena. Shin finally let’s loose and wonders how she is but only for a fleeting moment. It’s enough to let us know that the spearhead squadron really haven’t moved on and they don’t seem like they want too. They know too much about how things really are, especially with Shin’s ability.

New surroundings same old job…
