86: Eighty Six “Glad To Be Here” Review

86: Eighty Six “Glad To Be Here” is the fourteenth episode of the 86 anime. Following on from the journey of our ex-Spearhead crew. They finally join the Giad army as set up in episode 13. However things have changed but are also the same. This is a duality which is explored quite a bit in this episode in particular. With Shin being the central character for almost the entire episode.

Review

This is a great one because it’s action packed without being necessarily action packed (I know what I’m saying, I swear.) There are action scenes that show Shin and his new crewmates, notably Eugene who Shin made friends with in the library last episode. But they aren’t the centre of where all the action is happening. That’s with Shin and his story itself. And how, in a way, nothing has changed.

A lot of people are nice to them now and befriend them but there are still plenty of people who are very outspoken about how they don’t like the ex-86 and are hated by those people. They have friends now by are still very much isolated. Just not by borders anymore, only attitudes. It’s an interesting dynamic that this episode explores. And hammers home as history repeats itself and Shin has to become the “shinigami” again as Eugene is downed during battle and he has to end his life to save him from the legion as he has with so many others.

I loved this episode. It may focus solely on Shin and Frederica but that works in it’s favour as a very hard hitting episode is able to make it’s point without getting too distracted with other storylines.

Oh and most importantly, Fido is back!
