86: Eighty Six “Stay This Way Forever” Review

86: Eighty Six “Stay This Way Forever” is the nineteenth episode of the 86 anime. Following on from the build up to the main attack on the Morpho in episode 18. The crew finally depart. With their attack technically being a success as the Morpho retreats. They go after it. With Shin still struggling with his sanity it’s a hard push to the endgame.

Review

I’m just gonna get this part out of the way, lots of red flags being flown in this episode, particularly at the end. The entire episode revolves around the 86 fighting the Morpho and considering they had no hope in hell, they did alright. Most everyone in the Federation who still holds “anti-86” views are being forced to see them in a new light. Just as Ernst hoped. And Frederica, despite hiding inside Fido, and going with Shin and the others. Finally gives in and agrees to go back to base. Not without Shin giving her his pistol and her saying she’ll give it back to him when she sees them back at base (giant red flag!)

The whole episode is very action heavy but it juggles that beautifully with the drama and increased suspense as team 86 are left without a leader for a while because he loses himself listening to the voices of the dead. In particular Kiriya Nouzen.

It’s abundantly clear that should Shin keep fighting like this he’ll snap. There’s no way out. He’s made mistakes he wouldn’t normally twice now because of his fixation on listening to a particular voice. I’ve got a bad feeling this show isn’t going to end well for him at all. I’m preparing myself for it. For now, more episodes like this one please!
