The Matrix Resurrections Neo and Trinity

WATCH | The Matrix Resurrections Trailer

After yesterday’s Red Pill/Blue Pill teaser the first official trailer for The Matrix Resurrections is here. Check it out below and then join me after for my reaction and some HQ stills from the trailer.

From visionary filmmaker Lana Wachowski comes “The Matrix Resurrections,” the long-awaited fourth film in the ground-breaking franchise that redefined a genre. The new film reunites original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss in the iconic roles they made famous, Neo and Trinity.

Trailer Reaction

Okay, let me preface this by saying the first Matrix movie was a defining moment for me as a fangirl. My first cosplay (before I knew what cosplay was) was Trinity. So seeing Neo and Trinity back together on screen is a pretty big deal for me.

That first shot of them together in the coffee shop? Trinity’s “Have we met?” line. There may have been squealing (okay, there was squealing). The nods to the original – like the White Rabbit tattoo – had me bouncing in my chair. And seeing Neo take down not-Morpheus in that dojo made me punch the air.

The smaller moments too, like the aged reflection when Neo looks into the mirror – was that an old Agent Smith? The barista reading Alice in Wonderland and Alice through the Looking Glass (Priyanka Chopra Jonas I do believe) looks like a new Oracle. Perhaps a grown up version of Satie from Revolutions? I also loved the fact that Neo has been taking the blue pill as medication, seemingly for years, while attending therapy to convince him that The Matrix was not real, nor his experiences in The Real World.

Some niggles

I found that Jonathan Groff’s “Back to The Matrix” line felt cheap. I don’t know how it will fit the overall scheme of things but it didn’t sit right with me in this trailer. Similarly the shot of Neo in the bath with the rubber duck on his head, while adorable and funny, felt a little off kilter. Perhaps intentionally, hinting at Neo’s obviously confused mental state. I guess these are things to wait and see how they fit into the larger context of the movie.

About The Matrix Resurrections

The film is directed by Lana Wachowski, and written by Lana Wachowski & David Mitchell & Aleksander Hemon, based on characters created by The Wachowskis.

Alongside stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss are Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Christina Ricci, Telma Hopkins, Eréndira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Brian J. Smith, and Jada Pinkett Smith.

“The Matrix Resurrections” is a continuation of the story established in the first MATRIX film. It reunites Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as cinematic icons Neo & Trinity in an expansion of their story that ventures back into the Matrix and even deeper down the rabbit hole. A mind-bending new adventure with action and epic scale, it’s set in a familiar yet even more provocative world where reality is more subjective than ever and all that’s required to see the truth is to free your mind.

The film will be in theaters around the world on December 22nd. US subscribers to HBO Max will be able to watch via their Ad-Free plan for 31 days following theatrical release.
