To Your Eternity “Deep Memories” Review

To Your Eternity “Deep Memories” is the ninth episode of the To Your Eternity anime. Following Gugu and Fushi’s reunion in episode 8 the two bond more than ever but that doesn’t mean things are safe…

Plot

Fushi and Gugu have a heart to heart inside Gugu’s tent. Gugu explains that he’s never had a family and was so desperate for one that he once mistook people who employed he and his brother as family. Until they left. Gugu knows though that Fushi won’t forget him and even asks him to become him if he dies (foreshadowing much?) But they’re joined by Rean.

As Fushi goes off to search for Gugu’s mask for him. Rean and Gugu have a chat. Rean explains about her overly sheltered life and Gugu gets mad at her for being so unthankful for people who were just taking care of her. Because he has no concept of a parent’s love he genuinely seems to think that the way Rean’s parents smother her is just them being loving. Rean cries about his lack of understanding but eventually gives him a mask to wear so he can stop hiding behind the tree.

It works. And they have a heart to heart where Gugu apologises to Rean for being cruel. She’s OK with it though. Whilst Fushi shows up with Gugu’s original mask. It’s revealed the mask Rean had was for her to hide from her parents who keep paying people off to take her home forcefully.

The episode ends with Fushi being attacked and his March form being taken from the mysterious monster in the woods as they run to escape a servant from Rean’s household.

Review

What a great but also heart-breaking episode! More about Fushi’s powers are revealed and Fushi’s creator hints that he’s not making any progress because he’s not taken any more forms. He isn’t adapting, just learning to be human. Whilst the enemy is adapting and will obviously be miles ahead of him.

A lot of death flags in this episode for Gugu. He starts to help Fushi fight the mysterious monster but I don’t know if he’ll survive the ordeal. Which is sad. Especially seeing as he’s just about getting his life together. He’s growing and learning too, he realises that just because Rean came from the life he wanted doesn’t mean it’s a happy one. With all of this on the line, maybe Gugu will live to fight another day. And perhaps even learn a secret skill.
