To Your Eternity “Monster Brothers” Review

To Your Eternity “Monster Brothers” is the eighth episode of the To Your Eternity anime. Following his introduction to the land of Takunaha and to Gugu in episode 7 Fushi is finally able to learn. But it takes a lot for him to realise what he’s missing.

Finding the truth

Beginning the episode automatically we’re treated to new info about Fushi’s powers. He can manifest weapons and items he’s been hurt by. Gugu asks him what else he can do and he makes the spear he was attacked with appear. When Gugu cuts him with a knife and he immediately heals he is able to produce the knife. However when Gugu burns him with a torch he is only able to replicate the stick and not the fire. But Fushi doesn’t like the experiments however he hasn’t learned to say anything yet so Gugu teaches him to say something if he’s uncomfortable or doesn’t want to do something.

Fushi leaves that night and doesn’t come back. The next morning Rean shows up and asks about her wound again. It’s months old and the remedy isn’t helping. So Booze Man sticks a tube down Gugu’s throat and extracts alcohol from an extra organ he put inside him when he healed him. Gugu is rightfully mad as hell about this experimentation that was done on him and he leaves.

Leaving Home

Rean asks the next day where he is and Pioran, Booze Man and Fushi all have no clue but none of them go to find him. Gugu starts working the fields again like before but the only person who welcomes him is the field owner, who’s kind and doesn’t treat him like a monster. Everyone else in town does though. He isn’t welcome as part of the family and everyone hates him. That’s before he ditches his mask, after he does so he gets even more abuse with almost everyone disgusted by his appearance.

One day as he’s desperate for money he goes to sell the ring Rean gave him but changes his mind last second. In an alley on his way through the streets he sees his brother Shin all skin and bones being thrown out of somewhere. Instead of leaving him there to rot, he places the ring in his hand and repeats Rean’s words to him. Going back to his tent he used to live in. Gugu is suddenly kidnapped with his kidnappers planning on selling him. Fushi turns up in wolf form however and saves him by scaring them off as Oniguma-Sama. Back as a wolf Fushi openly admits to Gugu that even though he’s scared of the forest he saved him because he can’t grow up without him. The two bond over being monsters in the eyes of society.

Review

There was a lot to unpack here. Gugu saying it would be handy to always have fire around if Fushi could create it was a less than subtle nod to future events and I loved that. The fact that throughout everything that Gugu goes through he never loses hope or stops working hard. He always hopes for himself and others. Which is something Pioran knows I think, considering she refused to tech Fushi knowing it’s Gugu he’ll need. He’s the very essence of “humanity at it’s best” which is why I’m worried as hell for him. He is 100% going to die, and I’m just not ready for it.

I’m excited to see what exactly will happen now that the three will be back together again. I feel like the happiness isn’t going to last long but still we may find out more about Rean. She’s hinted at being important to Fushi’s development.

Great episode with great meaning! I’m just worried now for episode 9.
