The Netflix Curse: a recap of 2020 cancellations

The Netflix Curse: a recap of 2020 cancellations

With everything that happened in 2020, Netflix decided to join and drop another bomb by cancelling a lot of our beloved tv shows. Let’s take a look at all the major shows that we had to leave behind!

 1 – Spinning Out

Not gonna lie, this is probably the most painful cancellation to me. It happened right after a month from the streaming date of the show, in February. The series stars Kaya Scodelario as Kat Baker, a young ice skater who suffers a serious injury and has the opportunity to restart her career as a pairs skater all while hiding her family’s history of mental illness. The series follows the Baker family along with Kat’s partner Justin Davis (Evan Roderick) and his family.

2 – V-Wars

V Wars follows the story of the physician/scientist Dr. Luther Swann (Ian Somerhalder), and his best friend Michael Fayne (Adrian Holmes), as they face the evolving crisis of a deadly outbreak that fractures society into opposing factions, potentially escalating to a future war between humans and vampires. The outbreak is caused by an ancient biological infectious agent, a prion, that turns humans into vampires, released from ice by climate change. Netflix cancelled it in March 2020. You can read our discussion about it here.

(Ed: Can’t believed they dropped this one after THAT ending!)

3 – The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Even though this show had a lot of success, it wasn’t enough to save it from the Netflix curse. The last part of the show aired on New Year’s Eve. It ended with a very discussed finale which left most of the fans not really satisfied. The cancellation had been announced in July 2020.

4 – I’m Not Okay With This

It’s an American coming-of-age comedy-drama streaming television series, based on the comic book of the same name by Charles Forsman. Netflix cancelled it after only one season, in August 2020.

5 – The Society

The Society follows the story of a group of teenagers who must learn to run their own community after the rest of the population of their town disappears. The mystery begins when the students of the local high school return early from a field trip and find that everyone else is gone. The streaming platform cancelled it after one season due to the CoVid-19 pandemic.

6 – Away

The show only aired in September and almost got out of last year’s curse, but then was suddenly cancelled in October. Away follows the American commander Emma Green (Hilary Swank) in the first crewed expedition to Mars, the Mars Joint Initiative. The series is “about hope, humanity and how ultimately, we need one another if we are to achieve impossible things.”

7 – The Order

This show survived for two seasons before Netflix decided to cut it off and cancel it in November 2020. The Order follows college student Jack Morton (Jake Manley) as he joins the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose. This secret society that teaches and practices magic and is at war with a competing order of crusading werewolves called the Knights of St Christopher.

(Ed: I’m particularly gutted about this one.)

The Netflix curse also included the following minor shows cancellations: Osmosis, Mortel, Marianne, Soundtrack, AJ and the Queen, Messiah, October Faction, Turn up Charlie. Astronomy Club, Next in Fashion, Patriot Act, Altered Carbon, Ashley Garcia, The Big Show Show, The Dark Crystal, F is for Family, Teenage Bounty Hungers, Glow, Insatiable, Queen Sono and Hoops.

Did any of your faves get the axe in 2020? Will 2021 be better? We’ll just have to wait and see!
