Superman and Lois The Thing in the Mines Roundtable

Superman and Lois – The Thing in the Mines was a pretty jam packed episode. Our usual trio of PurpleBrina, Rike and Clare are here to chat about some of the key moments in the episode.

Superman and Lois – The Thing in the Mines Synopsis

Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) reaches out to retired Gen. Lane (Dylan Walsh); Clark (Tyler Hoechlin)’s visions become worse during heated arguments with both Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) and Jordan (Alex Garfin); Lana (Emmanuelle Chriqui) shares her frustrations with Kyle (Erik Valdez).

Lana decides to run for Mayor of Smallville and quickly decides not to at her first Rally she was face to face with some tough remarks about her past employer (Morgan Edge). Do you think she should stand tall and continue to run?

Superman and Lois - The Thing in the Mines

R: Absolutely! I agree with what Clare said, the livestream idea was amazing and I’m sure she’ll change people’s minds again sooner rather than later. Girl power, right? She’s got what it takes to be a mayor and I do believe in her. The people of Smallville will do the same pretty soon, trust me.

C: Hell yeah, and I loved Sarah (Inde Navarrette)’s idea to have her show who she really was via the livestream video in the kitchen. Lana is all about family, and what better way to show that?

PB:  I never thought of Lana as a quitter. I feel like with the right motivation she could do anything she wanted to for Smallville.

Clark is still losing control of his powers. He does it with his boys when he gets upset with them. What did you think when he burned his own flesh?

C: I was pretty worried, he’s not supposed to get hurt, especially not self inflicted. It was a pretty damn effective way of showing just how bad things are right now.

PB: This scene gutted me. My heart was just so sad to see him hurt himself that way and in front of his son. It was just a heartbreaking scene. And the fact that he didn’t heal right away. Just awful.

R: He doesn’t deserve this. Things are getting pretty damn intense one could say. I wish someone would be able to figure out what’s actually going on and help him. It’s bad. Truly bad. Things never escalated that much with him and the boys. Kinda next level if you ask me. Let’s see what’s going to happen next.

Jordan tells Clark and Lois that he wanted to tell Sarah the big family secret because he loves her and doesn’t want to lie to her anymore. Do you think he should tell her or not?

PB:  If I have learned anything from Superheroes is that you always keep your super identity a secret because the more people who know the truth the more they will be in danger. Plus she is his first love and he will love someone more one day. He does not need to rush this.

R: I do understand where Jordan’s coming from but keeping it a secret might be the best thing for both of them. As PB already mentioned, Sarah is his first love and even though he is pretty convinced to marry her one day that’s probably not gonna happen. Gonna be honest when I saw him giving Sarah the necklace it was a bit too much for me. It’s cute, don’t get me wrong, but they’re not ready for this just yet. I wouldn’t give away such an important family keepsake as a teenager. Surprised that Clark was involved with this one.

C: Yeah, the kid’s kind of an idiot. But I can kinda see Sarah finding out somehow, likely as a result of someone targeting her and Jordan having to save her and expose his powers that way.

Jonathan isn’t in love but he did have some issues when he found out his girlfriend was a drug dealer or should I say Kryptonite dealer. He wasn’t mad at her for it, he was more like why aren’t you giving some to me. How long before someone finds out he is using?

R: To be honest, I don’t mind if he’s getting stronger by taking Kryptonite. I just want him to kick some asses again. That’s what he should do all the time. Yeah, it would be more iconic if he’s getting powers on his own one day without taking drugs but if he’s gonna do this as some kind of a little booster, I’m okay with it. Go Jonathan!

C: If this is the route they are gonna go down to give Jonathan powers… I don’t like it. I reckon Clark will figure it out pretty fast if he does start using XK to give him a boost. The other coach might buy a sudden new weight training program for the other kid, but Clark is Jonathan’s dad, there’s not much that’ll get past him!

PB: I honestly think it’s either going to be Jordan or their new roommate/sister Natalie since he did share with her already about his girlfriend being a dealer. I hope he is just a late bloomer and he will get powers.

Dr. Faulkner is not who we think she is. Who do you think she is working for?

PB: I think it’s Lex. I feel like all bad guys that come after Superman are always connected to Lex somehow.

C: Yeah, probably Lex. I mean, he’s THE iconic Superman villain, so it would totally make sense. Also loving seeing Catherine Lough Haggquist (Motherland: Fort Salem) in this.

R: Don’t ask me why but I’ve got a feeling that she’s working for Anderson. He seems and acts like such a bad guy and I might be completely wrong with it but it’s been on my mind since the very beginning. However, it could also be too obvious by the way Anderson behaves. Who knows. Still gonna go with this one.

C: Interesting idea Rike, I hadn’t considered that. I don’t know if I believe it though, since Anderson doesn’t seem to have any idea what’s coming, he’s all about his Super Kiddy Squad.

We finally found out what the thing in the mines is. Thoughts on it being Bizarro?

C: BIZARRO YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. I love seeing Bizarro. The Phantom Zone version in Smallville was epic, and let’s face it, who’s gonna say no to double Tyler Hoechlin on screen, I mean really!?  I kinda thought it was gonna be Doomsday, but maybe 3 eps in to season 2 is a little early to bring in such a character.  Hope we get an explanation soon of why Bizarro is causing Super-migraines!

R: I truly have no idea who this guy is, sorry. I mean, yes he looks like a copy pasted Superman just bought in the villain section of a store instead. I agree with what Clare said, the more Tyler Hoechlin on screen the better. I don’t mind like 5 different versions or whatsoever.

PB:  I am beyond excited to see this character in the flesh. As I have only ever seen him in print and cartoons. This is gonna be awesome. Also kinda excited to see if they keep his usual super suit which just happens to be purple. I just love purple in case you didn’t know.

C: I wanna see more of him in that armoured suit, cos I just found out that was FANdemonium fave Daniel Cudmore!

What did you guys think of the softer side of Sam Lane this episode? Were you at all surprised he was so easily convinced to help them out?

Superman and Lois - The Thing in the Mines

R: He can’t just be a complete asshole, right? There gotta be at least a tiny soft spot left in his heart and I think that his retirement might help him figure everything out and not have anymore drama. They’re family after all. That’s the most important thing.

PB: He is trying to get on Lois’ good side, or so I think. Lois and her Dad always seem to be butting heads. I thought that once he retired it would get better between them but maybe they need more time. Since there is now drama with her sister.

C: It was nice to see him caring about his family, and even Clark.  It’s a shame there seems to be tension between him and Lois, but I think they will work it out.

In light of the revelations in real life about Smallville star Alison Mack being part of the NXIVM sex cult, did anyone else think that them calling the cult leader in this Ally was a little on the nose?

PB: Oh that is funny, I didn’t even think about that until now. That is a total jab at her.

C: Yeahhhhh that was kinda awkward if you ask me.

R: I don’t know Allison Mack at all and the same goes for the cult thing so I better be quiet about this one. However, I don’t think them using this name is a coincidence.
