Stan Against Evil: Find It, Watch It
IFC’s Stan Against Evil is a laugh-filled, spooky, absurdist treasure that you should be watching right now
The Premise
Widower and retired (fired) town Sheriff, Stanley Miller (McGinley) finds out his late wife fought demons in the cursed town of Willard’s Mill. He has to team up with Evie (Janet Varney), the new sheriff, and his daughter – ditzy but well-intentioned Denise (Deborah Baker, Jr.) – to fight the evil that remained after his wife’s untimely death.
How best to describe the show: If David Zucker wrote Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and got to add an amalgam of the entire cast of Scooby Doo in the endearing person of Denise.
A Who’s Who
Not only does it feature the actor that brought the coolest doctor on TV to life (John C. McGinley, like I needed to tell you), it features sometimes Rifftraxer Janet Varney (and a cameo by the newest MST3K host, Jonah Ray) and has guest appearances by The Office’s David Koechner, The Walking Dead’s Steven Ogg, and cult film star Jeffrey Combs; this show has a pedigree, and is obviously the nexus of cult and classic.
3 Seasons (but no movie-or DVD)
The show aired from October, 2016-November, 2018, and a total of 24 episodes on IFC. You won’t find a bad episode in the bunch. You will find all the cameos listed above, and more.
Yes, I’ve simped for the show before. But it bears repeating.
Consistently laugh out loud funny, with what I always thought would be realistic reactions to the supernatural. And at its heart-a widower that just misses his wife and is trying hard to understand his daughter-all while trying to adjust to forced retirement and fighting demons.
