Disney+ banning VPN accounts? – It looks likely
Screenbinge have posted an article today showing that accounts for Disney+ using VPN are being banned. With a simple message saying “this service is not available in your country”. For those not in the know, a VPN is software that masks your IP address and allows access to sites that might be blocked/unavailable in your country. Currently the only VPN services still working are NordVPN and PureVPN. This probably won’t last for long though.
Personally, I think this is a pretty terrible move. Quite frankly, it’s just going to lead to less money for Disney and more piracy. Especially when it comes to their more successful shows like “The Mandalorian”. Given the fact that the House of Mouse chose not to roll out Disney+ worldwide one wonders if they only have themselves to blame? The decision to release only in the US has left fans elsewhere with a terrible choice. Either wait (and attempt to dodge spoilers), use a VPN and still pay for a subscription, or illegally obtain Disney+ content.
It also poses the question of whether the creators behind those that have been blocked will alter their software to circumvent Disney+ banning VPN accounts.
People are willing to pay for Disney+, so to block them when the earliest some can get it the “right” way is, quite frankly, a massive spit in the face.
We can all only hope this is just a blip on Disney’s part because if not, this could sour a lot of potential future European customers.
