RWBY Vol 7 Premiere discussion

RWBY is BACK.

The Seventh volume kicked off on Saturday November 2nd for Rooster Teeth FIRST members and it was AWESOME. FN writer Clare sat down with her friend, and fellow fan Sophie to discuss the RWBY Vol 7 Premiere. Obviously there will be spoilers so read on at your own risk if you haven’t yet seen the episode!

So, RWBY is back with a bang. The gang have finally made it to Atlas. What were your first impressions of Atlas and Mantle?

C – I got some serious Blade Runner, cyberpunk type vibes up in Atlas. Also the split between Atlas and Mantle kinda reminds me of the Metropolis/Gotham split in DC Comics, where they are meant to be the two faces of New York City.

S – The city itself had a New York/Final Fantasy slums vibe to me, with the obvious heavy military presence it almost seemed post apocalyptic…

We met a few new characters this episode, including Pietro and the Ace-Ops team. First impressions of them?

C – I love Pietro and the fact he’s so connected to Team RWBY already, having been the one to make Yang’s robotic arm. As for the Ace-Ops crew, I had to double take when they appeared cos I was sure the leader was Cardin Winchester. Same dickish attitude.

(UPDATE: The leader of Ace Ops has a name, Clover Ebi, and his voice actor is Christopher Wehkamp (My Hero Academia). Welcome to the CRWBY Christopher)

S – Ace-Ops team to me seemed very much like the superheroes from The Boys,I kinda wanted to slap them. Pietro is a great character making shoes to make you dance! Hell yes i’m with Nora on that one! I kinda loved how he just casually mentioned Yang’s arm being painted.

– Yeah, not gonna lie, I wouldn’t mind a pair of those shoes!!

What did you think of the big fight in the middle of the episode?

C – Absolutely loved it. I went in having not watched anything before the episode cos I wanted to see the premiere with entirely fresh eyes. I remember I think it was Lindsay talking when I interviewed them at Dragon Con about combining abilities and it was amazing to see that not just within Team RWBY, but also Ren, Jaune and Nora. Especially the moment when Weiss used her glyphs to suspend four Grimm and then Ren took them all out.

S – amazing! I felt myself getting closer to the screen! Every character was on form, I love how far Jaune has come from faking his way into Beacon to holding his own on the battlefield! Qrow switching from sword to scythe! I can’t wait to see more!

C – YES! Jaune has come so freaking far and it’s great to see. He’s a real leader now, inspiring his team.

Biggest shock?

C – PENNYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!! I cried when I saw her, and then laughed my ass off when she knocked Ruby down with that hug!

S – So I also cried when I saw Penny, it took me a while to realise who Pietro was talking about when he said his daughter had told him all about team RWBY… just before she appeared on screen it finally clicked, I felt like a dunce not realising who he meant sooner (see what I did there). My OH’s joke was ‘the Penny finally dropped’ which he is still proud of….

C – yeah, I can totally hear him saying that, congratulate him for me cos that actually made me laugh!

There’s a hell of a lot going on in the new credits that we saw at the end, who was the biggest surprise for you in the credit sequence?

C – honestly, I was gobsmacked to see Tyrian have such a large presence, I really hope that his fight with Qrow and Winter goes better than the last time our favourite drunk went up against him.

S – see, the woman fighting with Qrow against Tyrian wasn’t Winter from what I could tell but the person who was on the tv screen with the word election next to her… I sense a new character. But mostly I think Jaune’s hair…. Might take a while to get use to.

C – I like Jaune’s new ‘do…as for who that was fighting with Qrow, I could have sworn it was Winter, but if I’ve learned anything from RWBY it’s to never think you know what’s coming next!

S – I have to say though as a Raven Branwen cosplayer, I did not see her in the credit sequence!! I need to know what happens!! I suppose I did start as a Yang cosplayer…

Everyone’s new outfits do look amazing but I am mostly impressed with Weiss’ new look, I would wear that to go food shopping! Which one did you like the most Clare?

C – Now that I’d like to see. Both the characters I cosplay (Neo and Cinder) are noticeably absent in the credits but given how volume 6 ended I know they are out there and up to no good so I’m excited to see what they have up their sleeves. I love Weiss’s new look too, it’s definitely my favourite of the Team RWBY revamps.

The vol 7 premiere is available now for Rooster Teeth FIRST members at RoosterTeeth.com.  It will be available for non FIRST subscribers on Saturday 9th November. We will be back for another episode discussion next week!
