Season 3 Episode 9 Outlander – The Doldrums

So last week’s Outlander Episode First Wife, had us on the edge of our seats. We got to see Laoghaire (Nell Hudson) back and trying to kill Claire (Caitriona Balfe), again. What’s the saying what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger? Well then our happy couple will be unstoppable in this week’s Outlander – The Doldrums, right?

This week’s episode Outlander – The Doldrums found Jamie (Sam Heughan), Claire, and Fergus (César Domboy), with a surprise of his own, on a boat, but at times it did seem as if it was going no where and fast.

Our roundtable review this week features Brina and Jenn chatting about this week’s episode and it goes a little some thing like this..

So they were on the boat, going no where… at least that is how I saw this episode. Did you feel the same way Jenn?

Jenn: It did seem like a lot of rushing to rescue Young Ian (John Bell), and then a bunch of sitting around and doing nothing and nothing fast.

Have you read all the books?

Jenn: I am up-to-date with the season. I don’t want to get too far ahead. So I kinda know what’s going on and what to expect with this episode and the others. Boy are we in for a ride.

How do you feel about long boat trip? Do you get seasick?:

Jenn: I think on a boat like they are on, I for sure would be getting sick. But not on larger boats from today. Was it me, or did their ship give you the Pirates of the Caribbean vibe?

Brina: it was totally the same ship from Pirates

Do you believe it was bad luck or just crazy weather that kept them from moving?

Jenn: hahaha. Are you asking me if I believe in the horseshoe? I don’t, I do have superstitions I tend to believe in, but if I was in that situation, I would have reluctantly done what Claire did and touch the horseshoe as she did.

What was more shocking the fact that Fergus was married or who he was married to?  Do you think Claire and Marsali (Lauren Lyle) will ever be friends?

Jenn: What shocks me, was that Fergus wanted to settle down in general. {laughs} I mean he is French and grew up in a brothel. But I guess if you find. “the one, ” anything is possible. I don’t think Jamie is going to allow the way they got married stand. I think he will want a “real” wedding. I mean he is very protective that way.

Claire and Marsali be friends? Wow, well I guess it depends on a couple of things. How long did Marsali hear about Claire and how long they are stuck together on the boat together.

What did you think of Mr. Willoughby (Gary Young) speech/story? Truth or Just made up as a distraction?

Jenn: I really kinda love Mr. Willoughby. He is so much fun and quirky. He, is kinda adorable in his own way, don’t you think? Back to the question at hand. Do I think his story was truth or made up? I think it was truthful at the core of it, but I think it was embellished to distract from the chaos at hand.

Brina, what did you think about the other ship’s Captain Leonard (Charlie Hiett) boarding Jamie and Claire’s ship and then leaving with Claire to be the captive on board doctor?

Brina: Dude that was so shady of them. I have such an issues with this time period. I am such a head strong woman, it would be hard for me to stay put. My first thought when that happened was I would have jumped. Hell I can swim. “Jamie I am coming” hahaha

Do you think that had to do with luck or just a young captain desperate and needing help did what he had to do?

Brina: I think he was unseasoned and a novice sailor. I also think he was scared and didn’t wanna die. So he just did what he had to do even though I think he could have went about it in a different fashion. I think Claire would have helped no matter what. He didn’t have to kidnap her.

Last question Since Claire has been back nothing seems to be going right for her and Jamie. Do you think they are still meant to together or are they doomed the 2nd time around?

Jenn: I think things will work out. I think Claire’s 20 years of living and experience is too present in her mind for now. First time around, she was enamored with him and they were kinda forced together. She had little love for Frank (Tobias Menzies) so it was easy to fall for the Highlander.

Now I think it’s tougher on her. She had a career and Brianna (Sophie Skelton). She does love Jamie, but she is twenty years wiser.

What do you think?

Brina: I do think time has changed her more then she thought. She still loves Jamie but like you said she had a life without him and she is still holding on to that life.

One last Question for real this time: Do you think Jamie will go to the future?

Jenn: I wish, but I don’t think so. He didn’t hear the stones when they were there the last time. Also remember that Brianna and Roger (Richard Rankin) both heard the stones along with Claire. Brianna obviously hears them because of her mom and well Roger hears them because of his lineage to Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek).
