A pretty fun episode directed by Jes Macallan. No preachiness, no woke garbage. Just a fun story with a lot of homages.

Review: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow 611: The Final Frame

Legends 611: The Final Frame sends the crew to a cosmic bowling alley. No, not the normal kind, an actual cosmic/galactic one. Well, I mean, it is the normal kind, but in a not normal…never mind. Constantine’s juicing is starting to get out of control, and Nate takes Zari camping. Oh, and Gary tries becoming Ava’s wedding dress designer to distract her.

An Invitation

While looking for the last alien pod, Sara(Caity Lotz), Mick(Dominic Purcell), Spooner(Lisseth Chavez), and Astra(Olivia Swann) accidentally invite themselves to a galactic bowling game where the stakes are very high. You lose, your planet becomes a trophy in the bowling alley’s trophy case, per the reigning champs’ rules.

The bowling alley’s designer, sweet and calm Buddy(Alvin Sanders), must abide by the rules the winners have set.

They’ve turned my bowling alley into a bullying alley!

Spooner is a pro at bowling, having learned from her foster family. Mick refuses to remove his gloves, so he isn’t very good at getting a grip. Sara, of course, is a powerhouse. Astra has never bowled a day in her unnatural life.

But the Legends team has to win. Spooner agreed to a game, unwittingly giving alien Mike the Strike(Nic Bishop) and his team Earth as a bowling ball as part of the bargain. Mike looks a lot like Joe Piscopo when he would dress as Frank Sinatra.

Zari and Nate are on a Date

Nate(Nick Zano) decided to plan the perfect date for un-vapid, usually in the totem Zari(Tala Ashe). Things go awry since just as they make camp, Mike the Strike takes over Earth, plunging it into darkness because he puts the Earth ball in his bag. Earthquakes and large round chasms form, and everything looks doomed, even Zari and Nate’s relationship. Nate even grabbed the wrong bag supposed to be filled with Zari’s favorite foods, taking Spooner’s weapon bag instead. This ends up being a good thing.

Where’s Earth?

Gideon(Voiced by Amy Louise Pemberton) is stuck in the temporal zone, unable to locate Earth.

Since Gary(Adam Tsekhman) doesn’t want Ava(Jes Macallan, who also directed this ep) to worry, he distracts her by “helping” her find the perfect wedding dress.

Constantine(Matt Ryan) has had enough, and decides to juice up to locate Earth.

With Behrad’s(Shayan Sobhian) help, Constantine takes the four elements into himself, using blood magic to take the Waverider to Earth. Well, he gets them to the bowling alley.

The Showdown

With Earth’s fate in the balance, the Legends team must come together as a team. Zari shooting Spooner’s gun at what is revealed to be Mike the Strike’s finger in the Earth bowling ball tips the scales, giving the Legends a chance to win. The final frame must be a strike, and it is down to Astra to bowl it.

The team wins, and control of the bowling alley is given back to Buddy as Mike’s team beats a hasty retreat. Buddy senses something powerful in Constantine, who brushes him off.

Thoughts on Legends 611: The Final Frame:

Buddy had such a calming presence, even on me. Weird, man. Weird. The fact that he could sense what Constantine was tells me that there is more to Buddy than we know.

Buddy also rocked some serious The Dude vibes with that sweater.

Loved the throwback to Sara wanting a cherry soda.

Mick and Spooner’s moment, where he shows her why he won’t remove his gloves, is poignant. And Spooner’s eventual solution is smart.

Gary is actually tolerable, now that the truth is out about his being an alien. He is no longer cloying and over-animated. Thanks, writers!

That dress, though.

I can’t say enough good about Matt Ryan. His subtle changes to Constantine since he started taking the “juice” are something to behold. His changes to John remind me of the line from “The Pied Piper of Hamelin,” by Robert Browning:

…And his fingers, they noticed, were ever straying
As if impatient to be playing
Upon this pipe, as low it dangled…
He plays a magical addiction like any other addiction. His fingers seem to be wanting to find the vial of blood, he is on edge and, at times, arrogant in his high. He hides his addiction well, though, too. For now. Again I ask why this man doesn’t have every acting award known to man.
