Northern Rescue Season 1 | Review

Welcome back Fandemaniacs! A few days ago I was looking through Netflix again not knowing what to watch. Then I stumbled across that show called Northern Rescue. I read the plot and watched the trailer and was very interested in what this show has to tell. Before getting into my review let’s check out the trailer for the show.

The Storyline

The story focuses on John, Maddie, Scout and Taylor West who all have to deal with the loss of their beloved wife and mother Sarah. In the first episode we get a first glimpse of each character and how they cope with their loss. Learning a bit about each character, the first episode ends with the family packing their things and leaving Boston to live in Turtle Island Bay, John’s hometown.

Arriving in Turtle Island Bay they all are supportert by Aunt Charlotte, Sarah’s sister. It is definitely not easy to start new in a small town where you don’t know anybody. In the next episodes we follow the unique characters evolving in their new life and the new town.

From new friends to new enemies, missing the people back in Boston as well as the not so normal living situation, we see a lot of new and different characters coming into the West Families life.

The five stages of grief!

A lot of people had to deal with loss and grief in their life already. I for myself lost some beloved friends and familymembers in the last few years and the five stages of grief are real and happening. Sometimes you are in denial or you are angry but in the end you accept what happened and try to keep going. In my opinion Northern Rescue shows all kinds of dealing with loss and grief. The five stages of grief are Denial and Isolation, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance and everyone is living through them when they lost a loved one. Continue reading to find out more about how the characters in the show cope with their grief.

John West (William Baldwin)

John West seems like a typical man in charge. In the first episode we learn that he is waiting for a promotion in his job in Boston. As this doesn’t turn out the way he thought it would, he decides to move back to his hometown to take command of the local search-and-rescue service.

In the first episodes John is focusing on his new job and the team he is working with – not easy for all of them – just saying. Being a single dad to three teenagers can’t be easy at all. John has to learn how to deal with each of his children in different ways. From fights with Maddie and being worried about Aunt Charlotte, John is doing better and better with dealing with this whole situation.

He definitely has his moments where he misses Sarah a lot but he does everything for his children and family and all this makes him an even better dad and boss.

Aunt Charlotte (Kathleen Robertson)

Charlotte is definitely the one who holds it all together in the beginning of the show. She offers the family to stay with her in her house and help them as good as she can. After an awful accident, the family has to find a new home and it is not normal or usual at al.l

Aunt Charlotte is a strong and confident woman who knows what she wants and owns a backery called “The Slice”. But she also lost her beloved sister and has to cope with the loss as well. As we follow her individuell story in the first season we learn about her dark past and what she went through.

Over the next few episodes her past is getting really present and puts her in all different kind of situations. Her story is probably one of the most intense in this Season 1.

Maddie West (Amalia Williamson)

In my opinion the show focuses most on Maddie West. She’s the wild one and doesn’t care about her actions and what she does to other people. She gets arrested multible times and gets in trouble A LOT. But I won’t tell you more at this point – just go and watch the show.

Her story is definitelty one of the most intense ones, and gives SO many different stages of grief that you yourself start thinking “how would I react if I was her”.

Personally I was hooked on Maddies story and what way she is going. Definitely the most interesting character for me and really intense to watch.

Scout West (Spencer MacPherson)

As we get to know Scout a little better, we learn that he’s a great Wrestler and trys to step into his deads footsteps. Being a great and strong member in his old school’s wrestler team, it isn’t that easy in the new one.

He has to struggle A LOT in his new team and with the new coach as well as some of his team mates. He does have his issues with Wrestling and the pressure to make his dad proud is nearly too much.

Scout is a strong and unique character who has so many facettes and shows them in every new episode you watch. In my opinion he is the one who lives through the five stages of griefs in every way. You feel what he feels and you understand it like it was your own story.

Taylor West (Taylor Thorne)

Our little Taylor being her awesome self and a genius. She is a working machine and has no limits when it comes to pushing herself to be the best of the best.

As we follow her story we learn that being the best isn’t always so easy and can be really dangerous. Taylor is holding the family together but puts herself in a lot of danger by pushing herself so far.

She is the reason that we learn a lot more about her mum Sarah and her past as well as her secrets.
