Recap: MacGyver: Mason + Cable + Choices

  • The season finale of MacGyver gives us a new Big Bad in Mason, and a heroic death.
  • Spoilers ahead

The First Bomb

A bomb squad is discussing that the call they are finishing up was due to a glitch. There is no bomb, and their bomb robot needs work. Walking towards the robot, it explodes, taking out the two bomb squad members and most of a building.

Charlie(Emerson Brooks) is called in to investigate. He is looking for more incendiary devices when a policeman appears. Charlie reminds him that not even professionals are allowed inside, and the policeman shoots him in the leg.

Calling for The Team

MacGyver, just before Mason starts to deconstruct his life.

MacGyver(Lucas Till) receives the call. The bombs are similar to the one that nearly killed Bozer(Justin Hires), and Mac and his crew are needed ASAP. At the scene, Mac asks where Charlie is. He is told that his radio went dead, and bomb squad members are suiting up to look for him. MacGyver volunteers to go instead. Finding a fresh trail of blood, Mac is puzzled. Where is Charlie?

He asks Riley(Tristin Mays) to track Charlie’s phone. It pings at a nearby hotel, which makes no sense. A wounded Charlie would definitely not go anywhere but to his teammates if he needed help.

Mason

Racing to the hotel, Mac and Riley find that Charlie has been imprisoned in a glass elevator.  The hotel security don’t believe Mac and Riley are anybody until they call Matty(Meredith Eaton). Never, ever question Matty. It is a moment of levity in what is about to be a heartbeaking episode. A device on top is set to cut the cables to the elevator, sending Charlie crashing to his death. Mac works out a way to help Charlie, when he receives a call.

The bomber knows more about MacGyver than is comfortable, and he wants MacGyver to suffer. The caller has anticipated every move Mac would make. Every move, y’all. If they so much as pound hard on the glass…it goes off.

Riley traces the location of the call, and the bomber is found. His name is Mason(Peter Weller), but not much more is known. But it makes no difference. Things have gotten worse…

Getting Worse

Bozer(Justin Hires) and Desi(Levy Tran) have found a secondary device-large drums filled with acid set to eat through the foundations of the hotel. The building would collapse in minutes, killing hundreds, if not thousands. Mason wants Mac to choose between his friend Charlie and the hotel’s guests, who cannot evacuate. Mac wants to save both, and approaches Charlie with the bad news.

A Hero Down

Charlie understands the dilemma, and that it is a Gordian Knot beyond even MacGyver’s solving. The people in the hotel need saving. Charlie pounds on the glass, setting off the device and killing him as the elevator crashes to the ground floor. A horrified Riley and MacGyver can only watch as Charlie makes the ultimate sacrifice.

Saving the Hotel

We find a little more about Mason. He lost his son in the Middle East during a bomb diffusing mission, and knows Oversight(Tate Donovan).

The acid bomb is diffused. With Mason in Phoenix’s custody, things are looking up.

The Interview

Mac wants more from the bomber, and interviews him in his cell. Biting a false tooth, Mason poisons Mac, knocking him out and he escapes. The ensuing lockdown is more dangerous than helpful, as the hermetically sealed Phoenix building is keeping sabotaged(by Mason) equipment’s smoke in the building, endangering everyone.

Matty opens up the building and in the evacuation, Mason escapes. The electric is down, and the door to Oversight’s room won’t open. As a last ditch effort, Desi shoots the electronic panel, freeing Oversight.

The Secret is Out

Oversight sacrificed Mason’s son to save MacGyver. Angered, MacGyver tells his father that that goes against everything Mac stands for. Angry and blaming his father for the bomber’s mission and body count, he asks him to leave. But Mason is free and still wants the MacGyver family to suffer. Season 4 looks to be dangerous for our Phoenix family.

Thoughts on Mason + Cable + Choices

  • I really liked Charlie and was sad to see him go. So glad because he got a hero’s death.
  • The phonecall to Matty was hilarious. She is frightening!
  • Kudos to MacGyver’s writers for showing how dangerous firefighters and bomb squads have it.
  • Riley turning away just hurt my heart.
  • I got scared seeing Bozer around yet another Mason bomb. Not going to lie.
  • Mason is shaping up to be a very bad guy. Whereas Murdoc is chaotic genius, Mason is very straightforward and has only one goal. Murdoc is the Joker, Mason is Dr. Doom.
  • Can’t wait for season 4!
