Leland

Riley(Tristin Mays) and MacGyver(Lucas Till) are still with Codex. Gwen(Jeri Ryan) separates them and sends Mac to meet the head of Codex, Leland(Tobin Bell).

Leland reiterates the Codex philosophy of killing off the population. He also reveals that Codex has been around since the Black Plague. He shows Mac a painting of an erupting volcano, and admired how it killed so many.

Mac seems to have impressed him, and he lets Mac go.

Russ’s Secret

Leland also reveals to Mac that Russ(Henry Ian Cusick) had been approached to join Codex, but he turned them down. This is why he is so obsessed with bringing them to justice.

The Mission

Sorry about the…uhhh… gun in your face thing.

Scarlett(Amber Skye Noyes) and her team, Mac, and Riley are sent on a mission with need to know data on tablets and in separate vans. Driving from the compound, Mac and Riley’s van gets a flat. Getting out to change the tire, they are ambushed by Desi(Levy Tran) and Russ. Mac confronts Russ with his secret. Guns drawn and tense, Matty(Meredith Eaton) and Bozer(Justin Hires)-still at Phoenix HQ are finally able to calm things down. Russ admits that Codex approached him. He tells everyone that is why he bought and rebooted Phoenix.

The Trap

The Codex teams arrive at a giant warehouse full of drums of gasoline. There is no nuke. Hearing an approaching helicopter, Mac realizes that this is no mission, it is a trap to kill them all!

Mac was right; Leland tells Gwen that Scarlett, Mac, and Riley were compromised. He adds that Mac, as her only living relative, was holding her back. Without any ties, she would be free to meet her full potential.

Grabbing Riley and a piece of sheet metal, he jumps in the scoop of a steam shovel just before a helicopter attack by henchman Ramon(Zach McGowan). The two escape before the building erupts in flames. It is unclear if Scarlett or any other Codex agents make it out.

The Dam Plan

MacGyver realizes that Codex is planning on forcing the volcano under Yellowstone to erupt, using a nuke placed in a nearby dam. Doing so would bring about worldwide death and destruction on an apocalyptic scale.

Mac and Riley track the truck carrying the nuke, and Mac leaps inside. Gwen is with the nuke, and so very relieved to see Mac is alive. Mac tells Gwen that he still has hope for her. After a fight with Ramon, Mac leaps from the truck, to be rescued by Desi.

Gwen Redeemed

At the bunker under the dam, Russ confronts and fights Gwen, receiving a broken leg for his troubles. Mac builds a device to safely disarm the nuke, but in a firefight with Ramon, it is busted, echoing what happened to cause his father’s sacrifice. Ramon is shot from behind by Gwen before he can kill Mac. Realizing her way was wrong, she has turned away from Codex. Mac tells her to leave, that he must manually detonate the device, causing the room to collapse. Telling Mac to go, she detonates the device, sacrificing her life for her nephew.

Phoenix Reborn…

Later, after Russ’s broken leg has been set, leaving him in a wheelchair, the team is at Phoenix. Russ returns Riley’s and Mac’s badges(sort of), and puts Mac in charge while he recuperates.

Mac’s first order of business is nervously meeting with a subcommittee in D.C.

He uses his aunt and mother’s collected data to speak to the committee on how to save the world(in a nice way, not an explode-y one).
