Recap: MacGyver 408: Father + Son + Father + Matriarch
MacGyver 408: Father + Son + Father + Matriarch: MacGyver must go on a mission with his estranged father to stop terrorist Mason from striking again. But is Mason truly to blame this time?
Spoilers!
A Can of Whoop Ass
Bozer(Justin Hires) is listening to his headphones, and as he gets out of the elevator at the Phoenix building to head to work, sees everyone running in the opposite direction.
Worried and more than just a little curious, Bozer follows. It’s Fight Club!
MacGyver(Lucas Till) vs Desi(Levy Tran)!
The fight commences, and Mac—wait. It’s over. Mac is down before Matty(Meredith Eaton) can even bet on him with Russ(Henry Ian Cusick).
P.S. Don’t mention Phoenix Fight Club.
Father and Son And An Old Enemy
A bomb has gone off in LA, and MacGyver’s father, Oversight(Tate Donovan), is called in.
It appears to be the work of old enemy Mason(Peter Weller).
Finding property listed under an alias of Mason’s, Mac and his father head there to confront him.
Cold at first to each other, Oversight tries small talk, but MacGyver shuts him down at every turn. Oversight reveals his cancer has returned, and he only has a few months left.
Shocked at the news, Mac loses his concentration, nearly wrecking. Need more bad news? Mason has booby trapped the road to his home, and now a bomb has been magnetically attached to Mac’s truck.
Matty’s Mission
Before they leave, Oversight tells Matty to continue her secret work. She makes another phone call, mentioning File 47. Higher ups are unhappy with her call, and an old acquaintance, CIA agent Burke(Keith David) shows up to shut her down.
It does not go well for either, but it goes better for Matty. It especially does not go well for Burke’s men, thanks to Desi, Riley, and Bozer.
Meeting Up With Mason
Mason has jammed the internet and phone service around his land, and not even Riley(Tristin Mays) can find them.
Using a hockey stick and some speaker wire, the father and son disable the bomb, and head toward Mason’s cabin. Working together, the father and son begin warming up to each other. Good thing, too, as the truck’s electrical systems have shorted out, and they have to walk.
MacGyver apologizes to his father, as his father does to Mac. Just then, Mason ambushes them at gunpoint, and there’s a lot of finger pointing until MacGyver realizes that Mason didn’t blow up the building and there are unknown assassins outside, and Mason realizes Mac didn’t jam the phones.
Dodging gunfire, Mason pulls out some bombs he happens to have laying around, and they escape through a hidden tunnel. Mason blows up the cabin(of course it’s wired) to hide their escape.
Removing Shrapnel
Mason has shrapnel, and MacGyver uses an electromagnet to remove it.
MacGyver tells Mason about Codex, and Mason is less than pleased.
Finally able to reach Mac, Riley tells him there are heat signatures all around them.
Surrounded, the trio has no choice but to surrender to Codex agent Scarlett(Amanda Skye Noyes). She tells MacGyver that someone wants to meet him.
Family Reunion
MacGyver finds out his aunt Gwendolyn Hayes(Jeri Ryan) is Titan, the head of Codex. She forces Oversight to tell Mac about File 47.
File 47
File 47 is a “hypothetical plan to initiate a series of natural disasters that would plunge society into chaos”. Mason calls Titan’s plan “The TED talk from hell,” and he ain’t wrong.
Titan’s Offer
Getting Mac alone by putting Mason and Oversight in a hangar, Titan tries to persuade him to join the terrorist group. She says that his mother wanted the same things Codex does, that file 47 was her idea. Titan tells Mac what Matty already knows. The CIA tracked Titan’s government team down, killing them.
Finding Mac and Oversight
Riley uses her skills to find out where Mac, Oversight, and Mason have been taken. The gang hops a plane to Mexico on a rescue mission.
Escaping
Titan leaves Mac with a guard. He uses a telescope’s lens to blind his captor, and sets off to find his father.
Tricking Scarlett, Mason and Oversight neutralize her. Putting those two around fifty gallon drums of gasoline was a stupid mistake. Building a bomb, the two make ready, Mason also has a detonator fob.
Oversight is shot. But there’s a problem; the explosion has to be set off manually. The bullet damaged the fob.
A Father’s Choice
Frantic, Mac tries to find a way to fix things. His father tells him to leave, that he will set off the bomb. He cryptically tells MacGyver that only he can stop Codex. They say their goodbyes, as Mac and Mason make their getaway. The explosion goes off, and Mac knows his father is gone.
Mason parts ways with Mac, their feud over. Mac tells him if he sees him again, things won’t be so amicable. Mason just tells him he hopes Mac gets the bastards.
Clean Sweep
Titan had planned for this, and calls for Scarlett to initiate a clean sweep. The building is destroyed, removing any evidence. They escape into the night, destination unknown.
Revenge On His Mind
Back at Phoenix, the team tells Mac to take all the time he needs. Rejecting that idea, and rejecting Desi, he barks out that it’s back to work. He walks away from them, with a dangerous look in his eyes.
