Music Monday – 90′s R&B and Hip Hop Part 2 (The Women)

Last week, I posted the men of 90’s R&B and Hip Hop. This week, it’s time for the ladies. These songs hit home for me. These were the songs to listen to over and over again after a breakup or because it made me think of my crushes. Yes, crushes… as in more than one. I was a teenage girl. My interests were always changing…

Anyhow, back to the music.

1990 – Janet Jackson  “Rhythm Nation”

Seriously, who didn’t try to learn this dance? I know I did. Hell, I still know it.

1990 – Mariah Carey  “Love Takes Time”

This woman can sing! This song is one of those perfect heartbreak songs.

1991 – Shanice  “I Love Your Smile”

This song always makes me think of 90210. Ahhh, Dylan… loved me some Dylan.

1991 – Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam  “Let the Beat Hit ‘Em”

Whatever happened to Lisa Lisa? When I was younger, I wanted to be her.

1992 – TLC  “Baby Baby Baby”

I remember trying to learn the lyrics to this song, pushing rewind over and over again.

1992 – En Vogue  “Giving Him Something He Can Feel” (Sparkle cover)

Great cover of the song and the video was just hot.

1993 – SWV  “Weak”

This is MY JAM!

1993 – Xscape  “Just Kick It”

No, I lied. This one is MY JAM. You can’t help but bob your head to this beat.

1994 – Brandy  “I Wanna Be Down”

I so wanted to be down with someone when this song came out… my forever crush in high school. Silly Brina.

1994 – Aaliyah  “Back and Forth”

RIP Aaliyah. Really gone too soon.

1995 – Moncia  “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days)”

Forever the PMS song. Lol.

1995 – Adina Howard  “Freak Like Me”

Seriously. I wanna freak in the morning, freak in the evening.

1996 – Mary J Blige  “Not Gon’ Cry”

Another amazing voice to go with an amazing heartbroken song.

1996 – Faith Evans  “Soon As I Get Home”

Great make up love song.

1997 – Foxy Brown feat. Jay-Z  “I’ll Be”

This song still makes me wanna shake my ass.

1997 – Erykah Badu  “On & On”

She got that old jazz singer voice and I love that about her.

1998 – Deborah Cox  “Nobody Supposed to Be Here”

Sing it, girl… Sing it.

1998 – Tatyana Ali  “Daydreamin”

Who knew lil Ashley Banks could sing like this? Honestly one of the best songs that sums up “crushing” …Kmah. *winks*

1999 – Destiny’s Child  “Bills Bills Bills”

Can you pay my bills? My telephone bills? My automo’bills? No, seriously. Can you help a half sista out? Hahaha.

1999 – Blaque  “808 Remix”

Before The Pussycat dolls had that “Don’t Cha” song, there was Blaque and if I had a playlist of booty shaking stripper songs, this would be on it.

Thank you for taking this trip with me into the 90’s. Was it as good for you as it was for me? HA!! Let me know below.

C-ya Thursday.
