Rest In Peace: True Blood

And the coffin is closed, last night’s final episode left viewer’s with an array of mixed emotions. It’s been a long journey since we first met Sookie Stackhouse and Mr. Bill Compton. From wolves to witches to even Lilith, True Blood has managed to take their viewers to the most fantastically unimaginable places, and leave us wanting more.

The most beautifully done scene last night was the wedding of Jessica and Hoyt. As a means of walking Jessica down the aisle and giving her away, it was a bittersweet moment for Bill who loved Jessica as his own daughter. It meant everything to him to know that she would be loved, she would go on and be alright. In a tender moment, while Hoyt and Jessica were exchanging their vows, Sookie heard Bill’s thoughts for the first time. It was such a tender moment for her to hear him, but that also meant that the end was near. Bill Compton had made his choice to meet the true death.

In the end, Bill asked Sookie to be the one to kill him with her light. But killing him with her light would mean losing who she was as a faerie. Bill wanted Sookie to have a normal life, with children and a husband who could go out in the daylight. But I think that aside from losing himself for Sookie, Bill missed his place being with his wife and children. Bill met his true death, not by Sookie’s light, but by stake, as both their hands were placed upon it in his final moments. Sitting over what was left of Bill, Sookie closed his coffin, and we see her walking off covered in Bill’s blood for the last time.

Flash forward a few years, and Eric and Pam are right back where we first got introduced to them at Fangtasia, and as for the rest of Bon Temps, it’s a Thanksgiving celebration with family and friends and children. Sookie is pregnant and smiles lovingly at someone…I presume it’s her husband. Having been so vested in these characters for 7 seasons, I’m happy that everyone got a happy ending. Lafayette found love, and unlike in the books they didn’t kill him off in the first season. The unthinkable happened, and Arlene is dating a vampire…who would have thought! Even though there wasn’t much of Sam this season, we can presume he found peace within himself, still with Nicole and a father of 2 now.  And good ol’ Jason a father of 3!!! Sounds funny, but I bet he’s the best dad. Pam and Eric are still Pam and Eric, and it’s comforting that they remained the same. It’s that refreshing bit of chaos that completes a perfect picture. And that leaves Sookie, and while I’m happy that she found her happy ending, it would have been nice had it been with someone we know, and not just a faceless man. Just my opinion though…

Rest in Peace True Blood, and Thank You for the ride…..
