Mieruko Chan “The Things She Sees” Review

Mieruko Chan “The Things She Sees” is the eighth episode of the Mieruko Chan anime. Following a new story arc from the end of episode 7, it seems. This episode has Miko see some truly disturbing and beautiful spirits before getting Zen Toono as a substitute teacher whilst Miko and Hana’s teacher is away on maternity leave.

Review

The episode starts with Miko and Kyousuke out shopping, buying a gift for their mother. This is quickly turned on it’s head as Miko sees a really nasty ghost in the changing room and decides to wear the dress instead of change out of it. Eventually the two do get a gift for their mum, a couples mug that she can put on the alter for their father. On the train home Miko has an epiphany that she needs to start challenging the ghosts head on. When she sees a particularly horrid one slice an axe through people’s heads to extract a spirit. Though it doesn’t seem particularly evil and I think Miko might be jumping to conclusions here.

Whilst chatting to Hana during class, Hana says something to make Miko come to the conclusion that ignoring things may be the best course of action. That’s all turned on it’s head though as their substitute teacher turns out to be the foreboding man from episode 2 Zen Toono that Miko refused to give the kitten to.

I actually love this episode. Finally where at a point where Miko is openly asking why this happened to her and finally she’s starting to realise that ignorance isn’t bliss. This episode covers the good and bad ghosts better than any of it’s predecessors as it shows a nice balance of the two. But also shows how Miko is quick to assume a good ghost is a bad one just by association. As she sees an apparition around her teacher. She assumes it’s a bad sign for the baby. But it turns out to be the ghost of her teachers 1st child that miscarried.

I Can’t wait to see where all this takes us. We know now that Miko is quick to jump the gun so could she be wrong about Zen too?
