Game of Thrones Season 7 – Has a massive Jon Snow spoiler been revealed?

During the finale of Season 6 we found out via one of Bran Starks visions, that Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) is in fact not of Stark heritage as we all thought but was the Stark-Targaryen heir to the Iron Throne. What can this mean for Game of Thrones Season 7?

The real name of Jon Snow has apparently been discovered to be Jaehaerys Targaryen, according to a magazine article.

One Reddit user has shared an image proporting to be from the latest issue of Empire magazine, which appears to suggest Jon’s birth name.

The user called The Shiv Sharma share of Reddit a picture from Empire’s Game of Thrones feature on 15 things about Season 7 from the Cast and the Crew of the HBO Fantasy series.

“As we saw in the last episode of season six, Bran’s (Issac Hempstead-Wright) psychic time-travelling ‘green sight’ revealed the true nature of Jon’s birth heritage and his real name: Jaehaerys Targaryen” the text in the photo reads.

While it is uncertain where Empire got the information and whether it is just speculation, Jaehaeyrs Targaryen could well be Jon’s real name.

Jon was of course re-named by Ned Stark (Sean Bean) and passed off as his bastard son in a bid to protect him from Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy), who would most have likely killed him out of rage over the death of his beloved Lyanna Stark (Aisling Franciosi).

It would also mean that Robert couldn’t take to the throne as there would be a legitimate Targaryen being in the line of succession.

You will remember during the flashback/vision that in Lyanna’s dying moments she whispered something into young Ned Stark’s (Robert Aramayo) ear, which could well have been her son’s name.

It makes sense that Lyanna and Jon’s father Rhaegar would have chosen a name for the child, and Jaehaerys would work as it is an old Targaryen family name.

If Jaehaerys was Jon’s name then the would be the third Targaryen by that name.

Who is Jaeharys Targaryen?

The first-ever Jaehaerys was the fourth Targaryen king on the Iron Throne and the longest serving monarch from the family with a reign lasting 55 years.

He was also referred to as Jaehaerys the Conciliator, Jaehaerys the Wise and Jaehaerys the Old King, suggesting he has a prosperous and successful reign.

Meanwhile, his namesake Jaehaerys II was the father of the Mad King, Aerys Targarye, making him the great grandfather of Jon Snow.

Although we will have to wait until season 7, possibly even 8 to find out whether this is true, it feels within the realms of possibility that Jon’s real name is Jaehaerys. Please let us know below your thoughts on the subject.

Game of Thrones season 7 returns to HBO on July 16th and will be simulcast on Sky Atlantic and Now TV in the UK at 2am.
