FANdemonium Faves 2019 – Movies

We are in the wasteland of the holiday season. That period between Christmas Day and New Years where you’re not quite sure what day it is, chocolate and alcohol is a perfectly acceptable breakfast, and your body is approximately 95% cheese. A few of us here at FANdemonium Towers decided what better time than to pick some of our favourite things of 2019. So here we go with our FANdemonium Faves 2019 – Movies selection!

Picking our top movies of 2019 are Clare, PurpleBrina, Sabrina, Angel and Clara. We’d love to know your thoughts, so post in the comments or let us know via social media what your favourite of 2019 was.

Clare

I really didn’t get to the movies as much as I wanted to this year. Of what little I did get to see, my absolute stand out was Joker. It was well paced, dramatic, thought provoking, shocking. I thought Joaquin Phoenix did an incredible job bringing a new dimension to a character we’ve all seen so many times before. That’s so hard, when it’s a character like the Joker, to make it something new. Todd Phillips and Phoenix did that.

Special mention

My special mention goes to Avengers: Endgame. It was the culmination of 10 years of storytelling and, for me anyway, brought the MCU to a close.

PurpleBrina

There was a lot of great movies this year and I wish I could say I saw them all but that is not the case. I am sure everyone will agree that Avengers: Endgame was by far an epic ending to a great movie series. But that wasn’t my favorite movie. Maybe cause its still fresh in my mind but I am gonna have to go with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Another epic ending to an amazing movie series. Though it did leave me wanting more but I still have all the Star Wars shows coming to Disney Plus to fill that void.

Special mention

My special mention goes to Shazam. I loved this movie so much. My son and I watch it all the time. It also helps that Zach Levy looks AFREAKINGMAZING in his super suit.  I have one more special mention and it wasn’t on the big screen it was on the small screen, Netflix original To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Seriously loved loved loved this movie.

Sabrina

I didn’t go to the movies as much as I wanted to but there is only one movie of 2019 that totally blew my mind. Talking about Avengers: Endgame of course! After all those years and all those movies this one summed it all up and gave us all so many feels. I cried, I laughed, I was desperate and didn’t know where to put my feelings! So yea this is definitely my favorite movie of this year!

Special Mention

The last movie I saw this year was Frozen 2 and it was amazing! So that’s why this one is my special mention. The music was amazing, the story was great and Olaf was as awesome as in part 1. Great work from Disney once again!

Angel

I would have to say Joker, hands down. Clare has summed it up excellently, and there’s nothing I can add that would be helpful about the film itself!

Not only was it a much needed home run for DC, it was a movie that proved the snowflake naysayers wrong (There’ll be incel violence at the theaters! Nope, but Frozen II had some…), and that warms my evil little heart.

Honorable Mentions

Avengers: Endgame. To see the Marvel Universe come to a close for my movie watching generation was fulfilling. It had its flaws(cough a wooden Captain Marvel doing what Adam Warlock should have been doing as he was introduced in GotG 2 cough), but still left me with a sense of bittersweet closure that not even the Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings films were capable of.

Unplanned. As a woman of faith, this film moved me. A movie about the very hot and contested topic of abortion that is respectful to the clinic, but does show the heartbreak and uncovers a lot of what the industry doesn’t want you to see or know. Based on the book by a previous clinic worker, it covers the moment she decided to leave, and what led up to that. The women that go into the clinic are never portrayed as villains in this film; they are portrayed as complex humans that are not to be judged. Not for everyone, but I am adding it here.

Clara

I went to the movies an unhealthy amount this year. Of all the movies I was fortunate enough to see, a lot of them were a disappointment but my best movie of the year has got to go to Joker.

Not only is it one I went to see more than one hundred times (I stopped counting after 100.) But it had me captivated the entire time. It’s shocking, thought provoking, takes on some of the most recent social issues and shows what happens when they aren’t taken seriously and there’s no Disney type ending to the tale. It’s gritty and realistic and doesn’t pull any punches and I’d be shocked if it doesn’t go down as a modern classic.

Special Mention

My special mention was a nightmare to decide on. In the end I went for the movie I haven’t heard much from but really should be spoken about more. It almost took the spot of favourite, that’s how good it was.

My special mention goes to Alita: Battle Angel. What an amazing movie, I went in expecting nothing at all and what I got was a moving story of a girl vs the world. The movie is visually stunning. Well acted and directed. The storyline is extraordinary, shocking and moving.

No spoilers but I’m glad it took the direction it did. No “happily ever afters” or “the hero wins against everything because reasons” here folks! And I’m so glad about that. It makes the story realistic and gritty, for me it’s storytelling at it’s finest.
