The Challenges of Building a Dalek: Part 3

Be sure to read, The Challenges of Building a Dalek: Part 1 and Part 2 before continuing. Picking up from where I last left off; we have started building the next section; otherwise known as the shoulders. Dad had already started converting the measurements from metric to inches. Which did not take long as we now have started to get the hang of converting all the measurements.

Just like we did with the base, dad put the design/measurements down using a foam poster board. From there he cut the design out and started attaching the pieces using glue and straight pins. Dad says to be aware using straight pins as they will draw blood, and that the daleks have drawn first blood. We put the design on foam board first, so that we can get an idea of what the design looks like before making the final cut on wood. By also doing this we can fix any mistakes we made while converting the measurements and any final areas we need to redesign.

So, we had to remove all the foam panels and remeasure the top; for there was had to redesign so that the front panels started at about a 60-degree angle. Though we have come across another challenge; with the panels going from a flat bottom to an angle it is causing the panels to twist a bit. As a result, we will have to add more ribbing and fiberglass on the inside to reinforce the connections once we cut onto wood.

Gun sticks

After doing some research we noticed that there are many types of guns that daleks use. Dad suggested that we use a claw grabber, while I suggested that we use the classic gun. So instead, we came to a comprised that we would make multiple attachments; because why settle for one type. We will have an adaptor so that the many types of guns can attach to the respected spot.

Currently, the shoulders are standing at about 16.5 inches; and 24 inches wide and with a slight incline that goes in at the top and meets at 22 inches wide. When you add it to the base it stands at 52.5 inches, 500 millimeters, which includes the wheels. We are still expecting to finish by May and still have no idea what the color scheme will be.
