Ncuti Gatwa Named as New Doctor Who

It’s official. The next regeneration has been confirmed, with Ncuti Gatwa named as the next Doctor Who.

Speculation has been running rife ever since current Doctor Jodie Whittaker was confirmed to be leaving the role. Fans have suggested countless actors for the role, from the likes of Idris Elba and Richard Ayoade. There were even rumours that Tenth Doctor David Tennant would be stepping back into the TARDIS. But we now know that honour will go to Ncuti Gatwa instead.

Best known for his role as Eric in Sex Education, for which he has won a Scottish BAFTA (and been nominated for several other awards), in the official announcement Ncuti said,

Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.

Ncuti is the first actor of colour to play the lead role in the show.

Returning showrunner Russell T Davies had this to say of his new star

Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds.

There is no firm date yet for Ncuti’s first appearance as the Doctor, other than some time in 2023, as Jodie Whittaker’s final appearance has yet to be broadcast.

Hey, I'm Clare, aka Ciara or C. My current fandoms are RWBY and The Last Kingdom along with a bunch of other stuff I tend to let build up and then binge! I'm a keen, albeit amateur, cosplayer and love attending cons in various cosplays. I'm also the resident comic book girl around these parts, especially small press comics, so if you've got an indie book you want reviewed, I'm your gal! When I'm not doing the fangirl thing I am a keen long-distance hiker, having completed Te Araroa in New Zealand and The Pacific Crest Trail on the West Coast of the US.
