Avengers Game Demo Review

Avengers Game Demo Review – Fun. For about five minutes.

The demo for Marvel’s Avengers went live a while ago. And with a bit of playing I can honestly say, Avengers is a mess. Obviously, with the game still in development (technically) and this a review based only on the demo I’m being incredibly lenient with my expectations. I’m gonna be honest, I went in with pretty much zero and was still let down.

Gameplay Overview

The game starts with the Avengers working together in teams to fight off a seemingly simple attack. You start as Thor, learn the basic controls that way and are then thrown into playing as Iron Man, then Hulk, then Black Widow.

The game uses the different fighting styles of these characters to showcase the different uses of special moves and such. Anyone who’s played a game like this before will be familiar.

It turns into a game of “jump here,” “button mash here” and it does get kinda repetitive. At times I felt I was just running on auto-pilot instead of actively playing a game.

There is an aiming system for all the characters but it’s very basic. “Aim here, shoot here.” Not much else to it and it kinda feels more like a gimmick for the non-ranged characters than actual combat.

I gave it a chance and hoped that after the tutorial the combat and gameplay would perhaps open up a tad but it really doesn’t. It’s still very linear (not the good kind) and very “just bash the buttons.”

Overall thoughts

Taking into consideration it’s just a demo I wasn’t too harsh on the story or the graphics. If I had to be, it wouldn’t be a good picture. Generally the story is generic and pretty forgettable and the graphics aren’t exactly setting it apart from anything.

The gameplay itself is very generic. Usually I’m OK with that but it’s not in a fun way. It feels like a task just to get through things, hoping beyond hope, the game will get better but it never does.

I will say this though, Black Widow is definitely the best character to play as. She’s tons of fun.

My general feeling is that this demo has not convinced me that I should spend my own cash on it. I know others will probably feel differently but for me, it’s just not worth it’s asking price.
