9-1-1 – Outside Looking In Synopsis:

The 118 “speed” to the rescue to save a family whose pick-up truck has been rigged with a pipe bomb. Eddie has a rough transition into his new job, Buck makes an impulsive relationship decision.

The episode starts off at a 15 years olds birthday party; as every birthday girl wants to make a grand entrance, she is raised up with balloons, as the winds pick up she spots a guy on a neighboring roof. The 118 are called out to the scene, as it is our first look at our new paramedic, Jonah Greenway (Bryce Durfee) or as Hen (Aisha Hinds) calls him, Monday; as they have been rotating paramedics for the last three months.

The victim was paragliding when the wind picked up and was trying to avoid some power lines when he fell. As he landed half on the roof and the other half was inside the barn when Buck (Oliver Stark) and Bobby (Peter Krause) discovered a gruesome sight that none of us need me to describe, the team worked quickly and got him out in no time.

What is Eddie Up To

We are now taken to Eddie (Ryan Guzman) who now works for the dispatch center as a Public Service Officer, he posts on twitter for LAFD Metro with advisories or answering questions such as, ‘what’s the top speed of an LAFD ladder truck’, though we never see the answer for that. All in all, he now had a mundane job that has no risks at all. Where he also has time to practice cooking and finally getting good at it. All the while you can see that it is slowly affecting him.

Is This Speed?

The dispatch center gets a call from man and his family who have discovered that someone has rigged their vehicle with a pipe bomb and are told if they reach a certain speed that it will go off. Athena (Angela Bassett) meets up with the vehicle, driving alongside them and confirms that the vehicle is rigged with an explosive. The 118 is called out as well, Bobby instructs Buck that once they are in position he wants him to jump onto the vehicle alongside Lucy Donato (Arielle Kebbel) from firetruck 147. Buck and Lucy are getting the kids out of the vehicle first before the parents.

Eddie is watching the events unfold from the dispatch center; as Eddie use to be in the army and worked with bombs he knows how they work. He immediately tells Bobby that the driver can’t leave the truck, as bombs like that could have pressure plate. They are running out of time as the freeway is ending; our firefighters quickly work as they get the mother out then the husband as they jam the truck so that the truck can keep driving. Buck and Lucy jump onto the firetruck and out harm’s way before the truck crashes into a street barrier and then explodes.

Decisions

Bobby has brought home a stack of the fire personal files, as he has been putting off finding two replacements and knows it needs to be done. As he tells Athena that there isn’t a shortage of well qualified firefights, but he needs to find the two with the right chemistry. “A good team has a certain rhythm.” It’s obvious that the team isn’t ready to move on from its two missing members.

Since we are on the topic of decisions; Buck and Lucy are playing pool, talking about their families, and having multiple drinks when Lucy decides to kiss Buck, at first Buck didn’t kiss back but then he did. Getting some season one Bucks vibes from Lucy. After many more drinks, Hen ordered Buck a ride home where he asks Hen of what should he do since he has a girlfriend, Taylor Kelly (Megan West), Hen advises him to tell the truth as it’s the easiest to remember and that Buck is a terrible liar.

Trashy Neighbors

Athena is called out to the scene of a house with trash and junk all over the yard; neighbors have been complaining to the city about this house and nothing has been done. The owner of the junk house is the one who called the police as he complained that the neighbors have been stealing the trash and junk from his yard as he threatened one of the neighbors in front of the police. This is when Athena notices the family from the pipe bombing live across the road now moving.

Athena finds out that the family has filled a court yard to force him to clean up but it was dropped; she is putting the pieces together as the bomber had called the family and told that he is watching them, and believe the junk house owner is the bombing suspect; as the owner told the neighbor the same thing when he threatened them. Athena enters the house and after dodging a few trip wires and rodents she gets the bombing suspect in custody.

Awkward Encounters

Before Bobby’s shift, he gets a visit from Eddie who after three months wants to return to the 118. Eddie claims it’s a mistake and that it has been a few rough months. Bobby is concerned over Eddie’s well-being, noticing that things are not alright with him and before agreeing to let Eddie rejoin the team he needs to talk to someone first. Eddie threatens to go to another house but Bobby says he is looking out for him.

As the episode ends, Buck is about to tell his girlfriend that he kissed someone else when he asks her to move in with him instead. As Buck is telling Hen about what happened with Taylor, he tells her that he panicked and that she looked pre-hurt.

Bobby has made the decision to make Jonah a permanent member of the 118 as a paramedic and officially brought in Lucy to the 118 as a firefighter.
