9-1-1 – Fear-o-Phobia Review/Recap

9-1-1 – Fear-o-Phobia – this is episode 13 of season 5. Fear-o-Phobia aired Monday, April 11th. This episode is about fears and conquering them.

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Monday night’s episode “Fear-o-Phobia“. Read at your own risk!

The episode starts with a little bit of a shocker; Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) have returned, but they have broken up. And of course, with their return Buck (Oliver Stark) and Hen (Aisha Hinds) have filled them in on everything that had happened since they have been gone. In other words, how the team has broken apart.

Diving Gone Wrong

A novice diver decided to go shark diving in a cage; of course, he freaks out when he sees a dolphin resulting in him accidentally pulling the cord which dropped the cage. Being a novice diver, he pulled his cord and came up way too fast from over 100 feet; resulting in numerous problems for our diver. The 118 is called onto the scene and quickly assesses the situation. The victim was suffering from severe decompression sickness and possibly a punctured lung. The 118 called in for a medivac, but it would be 15 minutes out before the medivac would arrive, and by then the victim would be dead.

New firefighter Lucy (Arielle Kebbel) gets the idea that she can build a chamber that our victim needs to decompress. So they use a fish freezer to have a complete seal and use a lot of compressed air from oxygen tanks. Jonah (Bryce Durfee) monitored the victim in the freezer until his vital signs stabilized so he could be taken to the hospital.

Buck’s Fear

While Taylor was leaving, Maddie stopped by Buck’s apartment with baby Jee and told him that she needed to find an apartment and a job. Buck says he would not have asked Taylor to move in if he had known Maddie was returning, then he goes on to explain how he did a dumb thing and ended up doing another dumb thing. But he does admit that he may have been afraid of being left again.

Those Aren’t Dogs

A wealthy man hires a pet sitter to watch his pets, but the pets aren’t your typical pets, they’re tarantulas. They have their own state-of-the-art climate-controlled environment habitats. The wealthy man raised the price to $8,400 for the week just as our pet sitter was about to back out. Who could refuse, wouldn’t I?

LAPD is called into a welfare check after the man hasn’t heard from his pet sitter in two days and was more concerned about his tarantulas than the actual sitter. This writer is also creeped out by what the police officers see; our pet sitter is still in bed but is covered in many spider webs. As Hen is cutting the web, more tarantulas come crawling out, Lucy clears the area with a fire extinguisher. Tarantulas are not poisonous but with multiple bits; they are known for making webs to store their prey.

Coming Clean

During dinnertime at Buck’s apartment with Taylor, Buck comes clean about kissing another woman. Taylor pieces the information together and realizes it happened the day before he asked her to move in. Buck confesses that it was not the main reason why he asked her to move in with him.

Robbery Gone Wrong

A man tried robbing a woman, Pauline, at a gas station at gunpoint. Our would-be victim turned the tables and covered him and herself with gasoline before grabbing a lighter. As the clerk talks her out of it, she then swings the gas pump at the man with the gun and then drives off after apologizing.

Athena (Angela Bassett) is called onto the scene and is set on investigating the situation. The call center is receiving multiple calls coming in from someone who is attempting to jump. It’s our victim, Pauline; who claims she has lost the ability to be afraid.

Hen thinks about Pauline’s symptoms and wants to help out, as she has noticed the sores around her eyes and the change in her voice. Hen believes that Pauline has Urbach-Wiethe syndrome; a disease that hardens parts of your body, and it is in her brain. As Hen is doing this, Buck and Ravi (Anirudh Pisharody) are moving into position to rescue Pauline from jumping; they move just in time and wrap a cord around her waist to stop her.

Confronting Our Fears

As the episode wraps up, our heroes are facing their fears. Maddie is back in her old shared apartment looking at the bathtub where she blames herself for what happened with baby Jee. Buck and Taylor talk about what happened and discuss how they want their relationship to work. Chimney comes home to see Maddie bathing baby Jee in the bathtub.

Eddie (Ryan Guzman) looks at the medal he received from the military; Christopher (Gavin McHugh) hears Eddie breaking things in his bedroom and calls Buck to help. Buck breaks down the door to see Eddie had destroyed his room and is in the corner crying. Eddie says that they’re all dead, everybody he’s saved is all dead. Eddie is afraid that he is never going to feel normal again.
