9-1-1 – Home and Away Review/Recap

9-1-1 – Home and Away is the fourth episode of the fifth season; the episode picks up about eight days after Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) left Chimney (Kenneth Choi) and their baby daughter, Jee-Yun.

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Monday night’s episode Home and Away. Read at your own risk!

The episode begins with Chimney constantly rewatching the video that Maddie left for him. Wanting to figure out why Maddie left; rather believing that she left on her own, he wants to believe that was taken. Buck (Oliver Stark) pushes that Maddie needs some distance and just some time.

At the 911 call center a living legend has returned; Claudette Collins (Vanessa Williams). She uses to work at the on-call centers years ago before she moved to the Valley. While at the on-call center she is showing everyone how much of a legend that she is as she works on a call with a child who is doing chest depressions on their grandfather during a home invasion. As she is instructing a child, she is also helping police into getting into the house and capturing the home invaders. 

Let’s Go Westwood!

During a high school homecoming prep rally parade; a very impatient driver decided to overtake someone before taking a corner not since the parade. Drove straight through the crowd of student. The on-call center is on the case when they get flooded with calls; sending out the 118,133 and 147 to the scene as well as in sending out police dispatch. With multiple victims, the 118 has their hands full. They manage to find a teacher mangled in the bleachers who can’t feel anything.

Chimney is on the phone with his younger brother Albert (John Harlan Kim) going through all his bills, and cracking some joke with him about if he had his own place, he would know what bills would look like. Albert tells Chimney the same thing that Buck did earlier, that Maddie needed sometime. As he is going through the bills when he sees a hospital bill about his baby, Jee-Yun, dated to the day before Maddie left.

Cap, We Got a Problem

Back at the high school, the 118 is trying to get the teacher out from the mangled bleachers. It’s now that they discovered the truck that plowed into the parade has smoke coming out of it. Naturally, it’s on fire and is carrying gallons of chlorine gas. The team need to evacuate the area and still need to get that teacher out of the mangled bleachers. The team managed to get the teacher out of the bleachers and contain the fire.

 

Chimney decides to go to the hospital to find out why baby Jee-Yun was taken to the ER, to talk to the doctor who treated the baby. When questioning the doctor, he informs the doctor that Maddie has left and just needs to know why the baby had to go the ER. Chimney confides to the doctor that Maddie has postpartum that it’s been rough on Maddie then continues that he blames himself as he wasn’t there the week the Maddie left, he was forced to with the power being off. The doctor informs him that Maddie was bathing the baby, when Jee-Yun slipped under water for a few seconds; Maddie just wanted to be safe, took baby Jee-Yun to the hospital to be checked over. 

At the on-call center, May (Corinne Massiah) confides into Josh (Bryan Safi) that she thinks that Claudette doesn’t like her or something. Earlier May was taking a 911 call when Claudette snapped at her for handling the call differently then she would. Josh suggests that May talks to her, that it’s just a huge mistake.

Mistaken Identity

During the call at the parade, Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Eddie (Ryan Guzman) find two cheerleaders. One of them was dead on arrival and the other girl had a weak pulse. When they asked the injured girl what was her name, she kept muttering the name Makayla; so naturally the pair thought that was her name. At the hospital they meet up with both girls’ parents, who they find out the other girl’s name is Cassie. Eddie took Cassie’s parents down to identify the body; it is then discovered that it was not Cassie’s body, that the body was her friend, Makayla’s. 

Dealing with the Mess

Athena (Angela Bassett) is dealing with the aftermath of Harry’s (Marcanthonee Reis) kidnapping; after dropping her phone in her bedroom she discovers a photograph from her bedside table is on the ground with finger tips all over her in the family photo.

Taking the time now to clean the photo, to rewash all her clothing, washes the dishes, and just cleaning the whole house. Later breaking down with Bobby (Peter Krause) about how Jeffery (Noah Bean) had been in their house where their family lives.

At the end of the evening, Chimney is over at Buck’s apartment, explaining what Maddie meant in the video when she said that Jee-Yun wasn’t safe with her. Chimney pushes the idea Maddie needs to know that it wasn’t her fault that she lost her grip on a slippery child in the bathtub.

Buck pushes back that Maddie will be fine that she will figure that out and that all she needs is time, if Chimney will give her time. Chimney keeps pushing that he needs to find Maddie, that she needs to know that it wasn’t her fault and that she is not a bad mother. 

It’s at the moment that Chimney figured that that Buck already know that Maddie left saying that she just needed to figure stuff out, that she was more worried about Chimney. That Buck has known for eight days and said nothing on the reasons why Maddie left. Chimney punches Buck informing him that is not okay.

The next day Buck goes over to Eddie’s apartment to ask for some advice on what to do about the whole situation, Eddie tells him that he was going to fail, because he loves Maddie and Chimney and that Buck is the type of guy who loves to fix things; that this isn’t something he can fix. Eddie even made the suggestion that maybe Maddie is the one that needs to be taken care of.

Family Bonding

May and Herry has a brother sister bonding moment. Harry finally telling her how he is feeling; how his dad didn’t notice that Jeffery took off with him and that their mom is the reason why Jeffery was even there. May encourages him that he needs to mad, that he doesn’t need to bottle up his emotions.

At the end of the episode Chimney is backing up his car to look for Maddie when Hen stops by to check on Chimney when she spots his pack up car. He informs her that only lead that she withdrawn some money out of the bank in Oxnard. After asking if he will back, Chimney tells her not without Maddie. Chimney and Hen have an emotional farewell before Chimney gets in his car and drives off.
