New Avengers?
Spider-man: Far From Home picks up hero Peter Parker still reeling from the events of the battle with Thanos. After the events of Avengers: Endgame saw several of the Avengers either dead or no longer in the roles, it seems like Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is interested in assembling a new team of heroes. After dodging calls (and enraging poor Happy (Jon Favreau) in the process) Fury tracks Peter Parker (Tom Holland) down on his school trip in Venice. Peter obviously isn’t really interested in being a worldwide superhero after what happened to his mentor and father figure in Endgame. Doesn’t seem like Fury wants to take no for an answer though, and brings Parker to meet Mr Beck, aka Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal).
There’s acknowledgement of the existence of other universes (perhaps a result of the Infinity Stones being taken from their intended places in the timeline in Endgame) as Mysterio comes from Earth, “just not ours” as Fury says. We also get a glimpse of Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) who was last seen at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.
Cue lots of European landmarks getting trashed by scary elemental monsters and Mysterio doing his best to fight them with Peter grudgingly joining the fight.
Not all doom and gloom
There are some fun moments, like Peter’s school chum Ned (Jacob Batalon) getting tranq darted by Fury in order to talk to Peter in private. Also we get to see Peter and MJ (Zendaya) talk and her say she knows he is Spidey. Do we think he will wriggle out of that one or will he admit his secret identity to her?
