WandaVision Episode 1 Spoilerless review

WandaVision Episode 1 Spoilerless review

WandaVision: Marvel’s first spin off TV series’ is finally here and has taken me by surprise at how good it is!

At first I was a little nervous of Marvel’s fray into the Episode streaming world. Some of that was alleviated when I saw what a good job they did with The Mandalorian. However, for me, Marvel have made so many missteps in their movies that I felt it justified not to expect much at all.

I was wrong. And I’m glad to be. WandaVision is fantastic.

Plot

The plot is fairly simple. Wanda and Vision are new in the neighbourhood and have just moved in. They do their best to make an impression whilst seeming as ordinary as possible.

Review

Generally speaking this was the perfect way to start a new show. It sets up the themes and tone of the entire series perfectly within minutes of viewing.

I’d only watched around 5 minutes of the show to know at least 80% of what I was going to get. The next 20% kept me hooked.

It’s a fairly simple premise. Wanda and her husband Vision are just living normal every day life. However, they’re not normal ordinary people. So that finds itself easier said than done. It’s an old classics style comedy drama that relies on keeping the humour subtle but bearable.

WandaVision Episode 1

Of course I’ll be avoiding spoilers so I can’t go into the next bit but I will say this: WandaVision handles the darker tones perfectly. There’s a bittersweet feeling to this episode and episode 2 that does make you sit on the edge of your seat a bit.

Wanda has hilarious mishaps as she tries to be a housewife. Vision does his best with his boss but he’s not exactly the best with people. And that’s really what makes it. Wanda and Vision’s interactions are cute and fun but the people they meet and befriend are just as brilliant. They clearly think this couple is quirky at best but they make the best of a wierd situation and end up sort of being the stars of the show.

In a show like this it would be so easy to become overshadowed by Wanda and Vision as they’re fan favourites. But none of the side characters do. They’re unique and I wanted to know more and more about them, especially after just a brief glimpse.

Overall WandaVision is a charming and surprisingly moving TV show that I couldn’t wait to see the second episode of.
