Virgin River Season 1 Review

Virgin River is a Netflix Original Series adapted from the novels by Robyn Carr. Season 1 debuted back in December 2019 and here you can read what it’s all about.

Virgin River Season 1 Synopsis

This whole series is about Melinda “Mel” Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), who works as a midwife and nurse practitioner in the remote California town of Virgin River. She hopes that this will be a place, where she can forget about all those painful memories, which happened in her past. But she soon finds out, that this isn’t quite as simple as she expected it to be. Daniel Gillies, who you might know from The Vampire Diaries Universe, plays a character named Mark Monroe. He is Melinda’s late husband. In Season 1 you get to know a bit more about their relationship in some flashback scenes where the two of them were happily living together but also facing some major issues.

One of the main questions during this season is: Is Mel gonna be able to heal herself and if so, is Virgin River gonna be her new home?

Main Topic

One of the main topics in Season 1 is the love triangle between Mel, Jack and Charmaine. At first, Mel doesn’t know anything about her “opponent” Charmaine, but as soon as she finds out there’s some drama incoming. Charmaine is all over Jack and she clearly isn’t happy about this new woman arriving in town. While she is trying to keep Jack, the man himself is completely overstrained by the situation. He doesn’t wanna hurt any of their feelings, which would make things even worse. Which side do you think he is gonna pick in the end? Will he stay with the woman he has known since forever? Or will he choose the woman, who turned his head upside down right from the very beginning?

Final review

Usually I am not that much into series when it comes to the topic of romance, because it’s always so predictable. You do know, what’s gonna happen next. There is no element of surprise. But for some reason, this series is something different. Throughout the whole season the characters are dealing with a lot of stuff like for example loss, grief and PTSD. It’s safe to say, that there is a great chemistry among the actors. In my opinion they did a great job casting all the different roles. Everyone is kind of busy dealing with their own problems from time to time, but for some reason they manage to tie it all back into the theme of the show.

Those tiny flashback scenes with Mel and her late husband Mark are a good aspect to learn more about their past. If you do watch them closely, you kind of understand why Mel acts the way she does nowadays.

If there’s one thing I can tell you, then it’s that some of the characters do have a pretty good character development. Of course, that’s not the case for everyone. They tried to focus on a few people this season, but I do hope to see a bit more of some other characters next time. I won’t tell you whom I am talking about, because I don’t want to spoil anything. See it for yourself and tell me if I’m wrong with this.

Before watching Season 1, I wanna give you some advice. There may be some characters you gonna hate at first sight, but things might change after some time. You never know. But for some reason Virgin River is making you wish, that you could actually interact with the show’s characters somehow. You want to be able to help them and comfort them, whenever something is going on.

With a new season only a few days away, there is actually no better time for you to catch up on Season 1. If you are ready for Virgin River season 2, check out the trailer.
