To Your Eternity “To Continue On” Review

To Your Eternity “To Continue On” is the eighteenth episode of the To Your Eternity anime. Continuing from Tonari’s rescue of Fushi in episode 17. They spend the night on the island but the Nokkers aren’t done with them yet. And soon Fushi and Tonari will have the fight of their lives.

Tonari’s New Future

Tonari goes to rescue Fushi but soon finds out he made his own way out of his prison. Whilst the two plan on leaving Tonari stops them and they spend the night in a cave. Safety from the oncoming storm. It’s there that Tonari finally opens up fully to Fushi about her father and how she feels about everyone on the island. Having a dream of her mother and father that night, happy and together, she writes about her new future she’s looking forward to. A future with all her friends and Fushi.

Just before they board the boat to escape “The Creator” warns Fushi of where the Nokkers are. He goes after them, asking that Tonari go without him. Hayase is also warned about the disturbance in the mass graves before she can find out that Fushi is missing.

Killing The Dead

The Nokkers take over the bodies of the dead on the island. A smart strategy considering there’s almost an infinite amount of them. Whilst they’re easily stopped by removing the core in their abdomen Fushi finds himself outnumbered very quickly. Tonari shows up to help and is almost killed herself before Mia, Uroy, Sandel and Oopa show up to help. Fighting them together the group make their way to where they assume the main core must be. But Oopa is caught in the Nokker’s tentacle-like thing. It cuts into her ankle and overtakes her body, using it to stab Mia with a spear as she goes to help Oopa.

Whilst Mia lay dying, Fushi tries to create something to save her but he’s got nothing of use. Mia accepts her fate, knowing Oopa wasn’t herself, whilst Fushi goes to kill Oopa. He stops just short of her though, not able to go through with it and his Parona form is taken. As the team try to move Mia her ankle is caught by the Nokkers. Uroy sends Tonari and Sandel away and saves Fushi by having him become a mole and get taken away by Ligard.

The episode ends with Uroy accepting his death as the core enters his body and meeting up with Mia and Oopa in the afterlife.

Review

Wow. What a rollercoaster. As soon as Tonari started planning for the future I kinda knew things were going to go terribly for her but not necessarily her friends. Losing Oopa, Mia and Uroy in one fell swoop really got me, they were all such amazing characters. The main thing being, these are the first deaths I can think of where it wasn’t bittersweet because there was a need for it. Fushi needed Parona, March and Gugu to further his own power. The deaths of Oopa, Mia and Uroy were just what happens when the Nokkers are one step ahead again and it’s that knowledge that’s even more painful.

I just don’t know how Fushi will get through this, let alone Tonari and Sandel.

A perfect episode with depressingly perfect execution. I look forward to episode 19.
