To Your Eternity “The Defeated” Review

To Your Eternity “The Defeated” is the seventeenth episode of the To Your Eternity anime. Continuing on from the shocking events of episode 16. Fushi spends time as a hostage. Whilst Tonari goes out of her way to rescue him. Things don’t quite go to plan but maybe that’s a good thing as a new plan is hatched and Tonari walks towards a new goal.

Hayase the Tyrant and Fushi’s adaptation

As the winner of the tournament, Hayase makes her speech. She declares Tonari the new leader of the island, though this is clearly just to get people angry at her and have her killed as Tonari is a thorn in her side. Whilst she lays claim over Fushi as she discovered him first. Being the absolute creep she is, she takes him to a private room and starts to molest him but is interrupted by Tonari and Co. coming to rescue Fushi.

Being betrayed by the captain of the Skyfish, Tonari demands to see Fushi but is told he’s underground. Ligard is shot by Hayase but she and her freinds are eventually saved by Fushi. It seems that “The Creator” was right. Being captured taught Fushi a new trick. The body they saw being taken away was just an empty husk, his real form turned into a mole. Fushi bargains for the lives of Tonari, Pioran and the others whilst allowing himself to be owned by Hayase.

Leader Tonari

It’s here that Tonari faces her first real hard choice as leader. She has to decide who gets to leave with them. She takes her friends, Pioran and anyone 7 or under. Selfish perhaps? Clearly her choice was coloured by her experiences as a child on the island but to assume ripping apart families is the right thing to do seems a little short sighted. I can’t help but feel that’s gonna come back to bite her.

Whilst that’s not the only choice she eventually has to make. She wakes up from being knocked out much quicker than the others. She likely has a resistance to the sleeping draught or something. Sneaking off in a small lifeboat, she makes her way back to save Fushi. Asking that the adults on the ship help take care of the kids. Her choice here is likely going to cost her, possibly her life but she is determined and seems happy things turned out this way.

Review

This was a great episode. At first I was worried it was going to be a bit slow, with each character doing exactly what can be assumed they’d do. And with that assumption would come predictability but then Fushi shows his newly found skills and the whole episode picked up.

Hayase is an interesting villain. I hope there’s more to her than just “met immortal person. Am now crazy.” Because if it is then it’d be a wasted opportunity. Either way. She knows how to steal every scene and I’m looking forward to seeing more from both her and Tonari.
