To Your Eternity “A Rambunctious Girl” Review

To Your Eternity “A Rambunctious Girl” is the second episode in the To Your Eternity anime. Unlike in episode 1 It is now in the form of the boy. And wondering the world.

Starting afresh

It may have taken the form of a human but it has no idea what humans need to survive and what a human really is. It spends it’s time soiling itself and starving because of it’s lack of understanding of basic human needs. Following It through to a new area it dies at least 6 times, each time coming back to life quicker and quicker. The final time is the last time we see It until the end of the episode, after it’s attacked by a huge bear-like creature.

Skipping to a young girl, March, from the small village in Yanome. She’s playing mummy with her dolls and is super excited to become an adult and be a mother herself. Her friend who thinks the world of her, Parona, makes her a new doll and she’s thrilled with it. Eventually the bell in the village rings and Parona tries to smuggle March out of the village. She’s stopped by Hayase though and March is sent back.

What does it mean to be human and live?

March is chosen during the village selection ceremony as a sacrifice for their God Oniguma-Sama. At first she doesn’t understand what it means but when she learns she’ll die and never become an adult she throws a tantrum. Showing her resolve to live a free life, even if she is too young to understand.

She is put under watch by Hayase but a distraction by Parona on the road gives March a chance to get away. Running and stumbling through the forest she eventually lands in a small water filled area where It is. She sees It heal itself from it’s massive injuries and follows it through the forest. March tries to get through to It but it doesn’t know what existence is, much less existence as a human. She helps feed It and eventually it starts to follow her.

The episode ends with March accepting her new role as mother of the boy who knows nothing.

Review

I love this episode! Once again we explore things like humanity and life and death. Not in the same way as the last episode. This episode shows that a desire to live is inherent in humans as even young March can understand dying is not something she wants. There is even one small moment when It’s eyes change colour to purple from yellow. Giving hope that it’s learning little by little and taking in at least some of what March is telling it. This was the perfect set up for It to learn about death for normal humans and just how final it is. And how some humans don’t accept that it’s final, and so will go to any length to ensure they live on even after death.

March is adorable and caring. She’s 100% a good companion for It no matter how small a time they may have together. Hopefully It learns from March. Even just a little but I do have a bad feeling March will end up dying anyway.
