MARS RED “His Dream” Review

MARS RED “His Dream” is the third episode of the MARS RED anime. This episode focuses strongly on introducing the Vampire Unit. Also some of their backstories and hopes and dreams. Unlike Episode 2 it doesn’t have a main villain to fight at the end. And the next episode is a direct continuation of this one.

Human hours vs Vampire Hours

Opening the story we see Kurusu wake up from his sleep in his coffin. Confirming that Vampires do sleep in coffins, these ones do anyway. They go to Tenmaya’s shop to show him the Ascra they confiscate from an underground shipper. Takeuchi confirms that Ascra has the V Virus in it. What that means in the long run is still unconfirmed though and I’d be speculating. Meanwhile Maeda is reporting to Lt. Nakajima. Nakajima wants him to go with him to a military meeting later that day. Whilst the sun is up (known as human hours.)

Kurusu and Tokuichi go out on the town but are careful as they’ve officially been recorded as dead. It’s then that we learn Tokuichi had a wife that he went to the festival with every year. Kurusu convinces Tokuichi to go see his wife as they move so fast people will just mistake them as ghosts. He agrees.

Meanwhile, in a meeting, Suwa reports that he saw a young blond boy vampire outside the theatre. Confirmed as very powerful, perhaps S class. This is obviously the boy Maeda met in episode one and Maeda knows it but says nothing.

Living for humans and vampires

Maeda goes to the meeting with Lt. Nakajima and is shocked by the lack of humanity or care shown by the other officers. They think the Vampire unit is useless as it only has four vampires and for them, numbers are everything. Nakajima explains to Maeda later on that these men don’t know how to fight a war as all their fighting has been on paper. He encourages Maeda to train the Vampire Unit to perfection and Maeda agrees.

Elsewhere, near the river where the paper lanterns are being released. Tokuichi goes to see his wife. They talk about life and how he’s happy to see her sell his stuff if it means making money. He’d even be happy to see her remarry if that’s what keeps her content. She replies in poetry and they recite poetry to each other throughout the entire conversation.

Review

This was one of the most eye opening episodes. Whilst there was no military action, there didn’t have to be as it was all happening on a character level. The hint that the blond vampire is a genuine threat enough that even Suwa would see him as a threat is scary. The dead woman that Suwa comes across, showing no sign of who attacked her, shows a vampire around who knows what they’re doing. The backstories of everyone fit but also don’t in some way. It’s clear there’s more to learn about these characters.

The thing that stuck out for me the most is the fact that in “human hours” there’s almost no humanity shown. But in “vampire hours” the humanity is everywhere. It’s full of love, fun and friendship between the new recruits. With such a genius writer at the helm, there’s no way that was an accident.

I cannot wait for episode 4 where we may get more details about the blond boy.
